Intending to sell organic, non-chemically treated food in bulk, in.gredients plans to work primarily with local farmers and vendors to offer fresh seasonal produce and other products, ranging from alcohol to household items.
But how will they not use any packaging? The in.gredients answer:precycling. Customers come to the supermarket with their own containers from home, which are weighed and labeled at the store. Next they fill up on what they need and pay accordingly. Certain perishable items will be packaged appropriately to ensure freshness, and in.gredients will also provide free, compostable containers for those who forgot theirs at home.

When bicycle enthusiast Izhar Gafni first heard of a boat made of cardboard, the seed of an idea was planted. Now, five years later, the 50-year-old entrepreneur is almost ready to mass produce his eco masterpiece: a fire- and water-resistant bicycle, which he hopes to sell for just $20 apiece. The bike is made of recycled cardboard, recycled car tire rubber and other organic raw materials, and contains no metal parts.
The super-strong vehicle can hold up to 24 times its own weight (20lbs), making it a perfect transportation solution for congested Western cities. And for poorer countries in Asia and Africa, Cardboard Technologies has written a business model which takes advantage of rebates for using "green" materials to bring down production costs and allow for the bikes to be given away for free.

When I first began researching for the Anima Mundi documentary (2011) I had assumed permaculture was about growing fruit and vegetables and that was pretty much it, but I was to learn that permaculture encompassed so much more including sustainable housing, self-employment, complimentary healthcare, education, economics and energy, especially embodied energy. Embodied energy is the energy required to extract energy like oil or gas or solar, and the energy required to manufacture something. This embodied energy element was something I felt drastically missing from environmental and sustainability debates where supposed "Eco-friendly" products when looked at from the embodied energy perspective were not as Eco-friendly as advertised. I learned that humanity is artificially sustaining 7 billion people through the use of non-renewable fossil-fuel energy with no viable alternative to continuing our over-consumptive wasteful lifestyle. Permaculture however offers an energy decent framework reducing our addiction to economic growth whilst still allowing humanity to evolve as a species. The Gaia philosophy explored in Anima Mundi naturally fits with permaculture principles, not as some hippie airy-fairy fantasy but as the scientific fact of our, and every other creature's, connectedness within the Earth's ecosystem. Crop Pollination Exposes Honey Bees to Pesticides Which Alters Their Susceptibility to the Gut Pathogen Nosema ceranae

Honey bees, Apis mellifera, are one of the most important pollinators of agricultural crops [1]. Recent declines in honey bee populations in many North American and European countries [2]–[4] and increasing cultivation of crops that require insects for pollination [5] raise concerns about pollinator shortages [5], [6]. Habitat destruction, pesticide use, pathogens and climate change are thought to have contributed to these losses [2], [7], [8]. Recent research suggests that honey bee diets, parasites, diseases and pesticides interact to have stronger negative effects on managed honey bee colonies [9], [10]. Nutritional limitation [11], [12] and exposure to sub-lethal doses of pesticides [13]–[16], in particular, may alter susceptibility to or severity of diverse bee parasites and pathogens. Recent research is uncovering diverse sub-lethal effects of pesticides on bees. Insecticides and fungicides can alter insect and spider enzyme activity, development, oviposition behavior, offspring sex ratios, mobility, navigation and orientation, feeding behavior, learning and immune function [9], [13], [14], [16]–[22]. Reduced immune functioning is of particular interest because of recent disease-related declines of bees including honey bees [3], [23]. Pesticide and toxin exposure increases susceptibility to and mortality from diseases including the gut parasite Nosema spp. [14], [15]. These increases may be linked to insecticide-induced alterations to immune system pathways, which have been found for several insects, including honey bees [22], [24]–[26]. Surveys of colony food reserves and building materials (i.e. wax) have found high levels and diversity of chemicals in managed colonies [18], [27], [28]. These mixtures have strong potential to affect individual and colony immune functioning. Thanks for posting this Mudra...you beat me to it...the latest from Dane and each day this tragedy continues along with what is happening to the bees. I will be 100 in 2050 and hope I'm long gone by then however I feel for the younger generations that will face this if there is anything left to face for them on this Earth.

Can local currencies help advance global sustainability?
Local financial systems that put people and the environment at their heart are welcome, but can these new models be truly scaled?



Care to buy a loaf of bread? If you are in Baltimore, Bristol, Calgary, or many other cities worldwide, you might just be able to pay for it using a very local currency. In Bristol, businesses can even pay taxes using local currency – the Bristol Pound – and their mayor is taking his entire salary in the new currency. New systems, like Bay Bucks in San Francisco, are popping up with increasing regularity.

Local currencies are not legal tender; no one is forced to use or accept them. And by definition, they can be exchanged for goods only in a limited region. So why participate?

The core reason for the uptake of local currencies is their promise to serve the real needs of local people in ways that national monetary and financial systems do not. They represent a possible path to a future that is more socially, financially, and environmentally sustainable.

Current monetary systems fail because they burden the public with debt and don't put new money into circulation when and where it is most needed. Financial and corporate systems fail because the intense drive for investor and corporate profit is poorly aligned with what matters most to the average human: wellbeing.

People at all levels of society are urgently looking for solutions, and local currency systems could offer hope. So what are the benefits and how do such systems work?

Local currencies are tools to assist communities in making full use of their human, industrial and commercial resources. Some programmes resemble "buy local" campaigns, which encourage shoppers to purchase products at local shops, which boosts high street activity. But the potential benefits are greater than this.

Social and environmental impacts are possible as most local currency systems build a sense of community and shared purpose. Some include a financial mechanism to fund new businesses, especially green businesses. Some include a mechanism to generate donations for local schools, non-profits and social services, and some to help a community reduce inequities in income and wealth.

Depending on their design, local currency systems can inject new currency into a region, thereby increasing its capacity to generate jobs and fund public services. For example, new currency could be directed toward public works. In the US, sewers, bridges, water supplies, rails, schools, roads, and dams are decaying due to age and lack of maintenance. In 2009, the American Society of Civil Engineers estimated the repair cost at more than $2tn (£1.3tn).

New currency could even be directed to climate change action, which is expected to cost trillions globally. In the coming decades, urban areas will need to reduce emissions, capture greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere, build dikes or other protective structures, and repair direct damage caused by local climate events.

Just as important, in this era of global trade, communities will need to protect themselves from interruptions in local energy, finance, food, and industrial networks caused by storms and droughts in distant locations. One way to reduce risk is to become more self-sufficient, which can be achieved by funding a diverse set of small businesses and local supply chains.

WATER BOTTLE HARVESTS WATER FROM AIR

here are nearly four quadrillion gallons of water in the air, yet people all over the world are still thirsty. Scientists have been working to break into this untapped resource for over a decade, and are making some incredible breakthroughs.

Progress in this field has been made by studying the survival mechanisms of an insect living in one of the most hostile regions on the planet.

The Namib Desert, located on the Southwest African coast, has sands reaching temperatures upwards of 140 °F. Here, there is less than 1/2″ of rainfall per year, yet the Namib Desert Beetle manages to survive each and every year.

Stenocara Solution

National Geographic describes the Namib Desert Beetle, also known as the stenocara, as a desert MacGyver. The stenocara is equipped with an armor like shell covered with bumps. The peak of each bump is hydrophilic, meaning that it attracts water. The slopes and valleys in between bumps are hydrophobic, meaning they repel water.

The Namib Desert Beetle climbs atop a desert hill in the morning as a fog sweeps over the land. The stenocara angles its body into the wind and miniscule water droplets from the fog stick to the hydrophilic peaks and gradually form droplets. Once enough water has accumulated, the droplets roll effortlessly down the hydrophobic slopes directly into the insect’s mouth, sustaining its life in the normally inhospitable environment.

Researchers are mimicking this natural trait to develop a bevy of important water harvesting platforms, including tent covers and roof tiles several times more effective at capturing H2O than the next most effective method. In the near future, it looks as if we’ll have water bottles that can capture drinkable water from the air as well.

NBD Nano: Self-Refilling Water Bottle

A company called NBD Nano is implementing this technology originally found only in nature into water bottles, with the hope that they’ll continually fill themselves while you’re on the go. In an interview with Public Radio International, we learn that the conceptual self-filling bottle can operate using a rechargeable battery or solar cell to speed-up accumulation and filter the water.

NBD Nano co-founder Deckard Sorensen wants this green technology available in all walks of life; installing it on people, cars, homes and anything else you can imagine. Sorensen believes that in a climate with 75% humidity, his device can harvest “three liters per square meter per hour”.

“We see this being applicable to anything from marathon runners to people in third-world countries, because we realize that water is such a large issue in the world today, and we want to try to alleviate those problems with a cost-efficient solution.”
