Neptune seems to have made an appearance on the East Sussex coast during a storm.

The sighting of the "face" of the Roman god of water was captured by BBC photographer Jeff Overs in Newhaven on Tuesday.

He took the picture as waves crashed over the harbour wall during the storm.

The sighting seems to be an example of pareidolia - when an image is seen in an otherwise random or ambiguous visual pattern.

Mr Overs said he took the photo at about 09:00 BST at high tide in winds of more than 50mph (80km/h).

"It's become a popular location for photographers because the sea 'boils' in high wind against the sea wall.

"The waves splash into the high wind and when blown back occasionally make patterns that look like (pareidolic) ghoulish faces."

He said the small wave in the foreground resembles a hand.

A long-term drought that has hit two-thirds of Mexico is likely to worsen in coming weeks with forecasts of high temperatures and warnings of crop damage and water supply shortages on the horizon, including in the populous capital of Mexico City.

Experts are sounding the alarm that parched crops could under-produce after temperatures hit 40 degrees Celsius (104F) on June 30 in some parts of northern Mexico, including key farming areas.

Water shortages are common in parts of Mexico, but have worsened amid heat extremes blamed on climate change, according to scientists and data from Mexico’s federal water commission CONAGUA.

About 70 percent of Mexico is affected by drought, up from about half in December. About a fifth of the country is experiencing extreme drought compared with less than 5 percent each year since 2012.

Experts fear the drought will reach the 22 million inhabitants of Mexico City’s metro area, which is quenched by a network of reservoirs. Some districts have no piped drinking water at the best of times.

Londoners were left battling 'biblical storms' last night as flash floods hit the capital and left a trail of destruction across the city, with rescue teams evacuating properties amid fears of collapsing ceilings and several tube stations forced to close.

Flood waters poured through the streets of Portobello Road in Notting Hill after nearly three inches of rain hit the capital in just 90 minutes and in Raynes Park, south London, cars were left abandoned in around 2ft of water after severe flooding caused travel chaos.

Meanwhile in Turnpike Lane, north London, people were spotted sprinting through the streets as the torrential downpours pelted down and flooded the roads.

In other scenes, Sloane Square tube station in Chelsea was forced to shut down after fast flowing water flooded the underground and in Maida Vale, west London, motorists desperately tried to navigate their way through the roads as the heavy rainfall continued to fall.

Elsewhere, in St John's Wood, Westminster, one homeowner was left shocked as water began to splurge out of their overflowing toilet through their property.

MPS Westminster also reported heavy flooding around Colville Terrace, Holland Road and Ladbroke Grove and said the emergency services were now evacuating areas due to flooded properties and collapsed ceilings.

A spokesman said: 'Reports of heavy flooding around Westminster including Colville Terrace, Holland Road and Ladbroke Grove Emergency services assisting in evacuating areas due to reports of flooded properties and collapsed ceilings. Road closures are in place.

The scenes of chaos came as the London Fire Brigade confirmed they had received more than 1,000 calls related to flooding.

A spokesperson for the service said: 'We're asking people not to walk through or drive through the flood water. Flood water can be contaminated and vehicles can become unstable.

'We're also asking people to look out for their neighbours and look out for weather warnings in their area.'

As the intense downpours ensued, Euston Station lines had to be shut down and underground stations, including Chalk Farm and Hampstead stations in north London and Wimbledon in the south, also drew their barriers due to the heavy rainfall.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: 'The line between Watford Junction and Euston has been closed and engineers are on site inspecting the track as the water recedes. As soon as it is safe to do so, we will have trains on the move again.

THREE GORGES DAM TO RECEIVE BIG FLOOD

“I drove through the cloud of these mosquitoes for several hundred metres,” said Alexei, from Ust-Kamchatsk.

“It wasn’t a pleasant experience as I could hardly see the road.

“I didn’t dare open my windows.

“Giant pillars of mosquitoes were visible everywhere I looked.

"I could see some of them breaking apart only to get back together into a new tornado.”

Experts told Kamchatka Inform media outlet locals should not worry about this swarming, which was a mating phenomenon.

“These are male mosquitoes swarming around one of several females in order to mate - there is nothing wrong with this,” said entomologist Lyudmila Lobkova.

The swarming males mosquitoes “do not attack humans", she said.

“These columns of mosquitoes looked like they touched the clouds,” said Alexei.

Locals say they are used to such swarms but they are worse this year.

Repellents do not work on them, said a report.

Back in the UK, an expert warned that Asian tiger mosquitoes are set to take hold as the heatwave sends temperatures soaring.

The UK is home to around 30 different types of mosquito, some of which can bite — leaving itchy marks on the skin.

It was accidentally introduced to Europe in the 1970s and has since become established in some parts of the continent such as Italy and France.

The Asian tiger mosquito is around four times larger than a normal mosquito and carries diseases such as dengue fever and Zika virus.

It is thought the tiger mosquito was first introduced to Europe through a shipment of goods from China arriving in Albania in the 1970s.

Thanks for your post Oxy. The haze from the smoke has been intense and they were talking about doing back fires to help stop some of them. I'm praying for RAIN. It's cloudy this morning.. perhaps we'll get some storms to help cool things off. It's ironic how there is so much flooding and rain in the US Southeast and Europe. Historical floods. Yet we're like a tinder box in our next of the woods. People aren't even allowed to smoke.

Shanghai issued the second-highest-level typhoon warning as In-Fa is expected to hit the city’s southern Pudong district in another landfall later on Sunday. One video posted to social media shows the sky over the city darkened by black storm clouds brooding over Shanghai’s skyscrapers.

Around 330,000 people were evacuated from the city’s coastal areas, including the Fengxian District. Over 100,000 civil servants and workers were deployed to the city’s streets as part of the massive flood prevention measures initiated by the authorities.

All passenger flights to and from Shanghai’s two airports were canceled on Sunday. The city’s ports – some of the world’s busiest shipping hubs – evacuated thousands of vessels. The international airport of Hangzhou – a city southwest of Shanghai – canceled all flights as well.

Dramatic images from space taken both before and after remnants of Hurricane Ida blasted through the Northeast United States on Wednesday and dumped historic levels of rain show the scale of the devastation. Flash flooding killed at least 45 people in the Northeast, including 23 in New Jersey alone and 12 in New York City as cleanup is underway from the 'historic' weather event that officials blamed on climate change. The destructive flooding was felt in New Jersey, where satellite images showed a baseball stadium that is home to the New York Yankees minor league affiliate submerged in water. TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, home of the Somerset Patriots, saw the water level cover not just the baseball field but several rows of the stands as well. The Patriots are the Yankees' AA affiliate. Maxar Technologies on Thursday also released images showing the town of Manville, New Jersey both before and after torrential downpours left it completely flooded. At least 23 people died in New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy told reporters. 'The majority of these deaths were individuals who got caught in their vehicles,' he said. Murphy on Thursday requested that President Joe Biden issue a major disaster declaration due to the impact from the remnants of Ida. Biden accepted the governor's request. Just a few hours into being marooned, the train's air-conditioning and ventilation went with the electricity. The roughly 200 passengers on board received some relief when cops arrived and opened the doors around 4 a.m. to give them water. However, they remained stranded until a rescue train was able to tow them to the Newark Airport station. From there, the passengers were able to get on other trains - with several recounting that they didn't make it to their destinations until well after 7 a.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.—Fire officials began digging in for a long battle against the Caldor Fire, despite early success in keeping flames away from the resort town so far this week.

Wednesday was the third consecutive day that high winds made the fire threaten the Northern California city of 22,000, casting embers toward homes in outlying areas as an army of firefighters stood ready to put them out. Although Thursday was calmer and no homes have been reported lost in the valley south of South Lake Tahoe, any fresh gusts of wind could whip the Caldor Fire up again, said Diana Swart, spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

As she spoke Wednesday, winds suddenly picked up and pine trees shrouded in smoke along a cliff high above where she stood along Highway 89 exploded in flames. ”Oh, we’ve got a fire right there,” Ms. Swart said.

A helicopter made several passes with water drops to keep an area near some homes from igniting, as a fire engine raced to the scene to deploy hoses just in case. But the fire didn’t end up spreading there.

“This is a major firefight; this is a significant fire,” Eric Guevin, fire marshal of the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, said late Wednesday from the parking lot of the Heavenly Mountain Resort. He said more firefighters were being brought in to fight the Caldor Fire, adding to the 4,224 already deployed.

“We’re going to send all of our resources here, so that they can set up with trailers, sleeping and logistics support—everything that we need to sustain this firefight,” Mr. Guevin said as bulldozers could be seen cutting lines to separate the resort base area from the forest, which is so dry that fire analysts compared the moisture levels to that of plywood.

While the strong winds that helped fuel the spread of flames earlier in the week had died down somewhat, the South Lake Tahoe area isn’t yet in the clear. The problem, fire officials say, is that there is no precipitation expected in the area for perhaps several weeks, during which time renewed windstorms could whip the smoldering embers into a new threat to South Lake Tahoe and other lakefront communities in the popular tourist destination.

Evacuation orders for parts of El Dorado County were downgraded to warnings overnight, but new orders were issued for some areas of Alpine County Thursday morning. Evacuation orders for communities in Nevada’s Douglas County, just across the state line, remain in effect. Managers of some of the casino hotels in Stateline, Nev., ordered guests evacuated to make room for more fire crews and other first responders.

Kim Balo, one of the guests ousted from the MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa, said she wasn’t upset even though she had already evacuated her home nearby and was faced with moving a car full of valuables again. “I’m in shock kind of, but I’m not freaking out,” said Ms. Balo, 57 years old, as she loaded belongings in the valet entrance. “It doesn’t do any good to panic.”

On Wednesday, the White House approved California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s request for a presidential emergency declaration for the Caldor Fire, after doing so for the Dixie and other big fires ravaging the state this summer. Mr. Newsom had already declared a state of emergency for El Dorado County, where the Caldor sparked, as well as several nearby counties.

Hurricane Larry, packing maximum sustained winds of 80\u00a0mph, was expected to intensify into a major hurricane – Category 3 or stronger \u00a0– within days.

This is an email update from a friend in NJ. Woah!

HURRICANE IDA

It was quite a storm. Couldn’t believe the damage especially since it wasn’t as big as Storm Sandy or Hurricane Irene. 49 people have died in NY & NJ. 10 inches of rain came down quickly and because just a few days ago we had another 8-10 inches the ground was saturated and couldn’t absorb that much water that quickly. All the creeks, lakes & rivers overflowed and came flowing down the streets. Everybody who parked their car in their street watched the water come down and take their cars in the flow. Cars ended up on people’s lawns, wedged into trees and piled up into intersections.

The Garden State Parkway which is an 8-lane highway had 4 feet of water on it. The next day you can see hundreds of cars lined up on both sides of the highway. They had to get backhoe trucks to come and pick the cars out of the water. Jay turned around and came home and said, “There is no way I can get to work”.

In Rahway, the next town to us along the Rahway River a house blew up and shot the air conditioner unit across the street into the next house. Luckily the couple who lives there got stuck in flood waters and couldn’t get home so were not home when it exploded. Otherwise, they would be dead. They were interviewing the neighbors on TV and one woman said that the couple's house burned down 5 years ago and this was their new house. “They should move away; something is trying to tell them something”. I love NJ people. Everybody on that block their house windows blew out so there they are in this terrible storm with no windows trying to keep the rain out.

In Millburn the water came out of the street on Main Street and shot 6 feet of water down the road. There were so many cars piled up on the corner of Millburn Ave and Vauxhall Road that it looked like a demolition rally.

200 people got stuck in a NJ Transit train just before Newark. It's all-swamp land there so they could not be rescued for quite a while. Nothing so exciting as being stuck on a train in a covid pandemic with no air conditioning, lights or food with swamp waters rising up to your window.

The next day so many stores were closed due to damage or no electricity.

The subways in NYC were a disaster. Water pouring in from the sewers, down the stairs and from the street.

We are very grateful that our house is up from the street and our cars are parked in the driveway that is slanted away from the house. We have a park at the end of the street where the water goes too. We had electricity too. I did have to go outside in the pouring rain and sweep water away from the door because it did start to pool about 4 inches by the door.

There was a tornado where over 100 homes got damaged or destroyed. NJ does not normally have tornadoes. Don’t tell me that climate change isn’t real!

It was a wild night!

Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Hurricane Larry hit Newfoundland early Saturday, leaving tens of thousands in the dark.

The Category 1 storm with heavy winds, intense rain and storm surge cut power through the eastern past of the Canadian province, including the capital St. John's and surrounding areas, CBC News reported.

Before the storm moved away from the area, about 60,000 Newfoundland Power customers lost electricity, which the power company said was restored by noon for more than half.

The company added that its full workforce will be out repairing damage Saturday, and urged people to stay home while crews assess damaged areas.
