Is a US-North Korea war imminent?
'Kim will only do what he ... can get away with'

    http://www.rocketcitynow.com/news/world-news/is-a-usnorth-korea-war-imminent/699737662
(CNN) - US warships and submarines are on the move. North Korea has carried out a massive live-fire drill. Washington and Pyongyang are trading inflammatory rhetoric on a weekly basis.

With all of this, it's hard to know if war is actually imminent or if these are the growing pains of US President Donald Trump's new administration figuring out how to deal with North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un.

Daily reports of the fragile situation fuel worries that war is imminent. But has it really reached a point of no return?

    Just one spark
Analysts fear the situation is a tinderbox that could be set off by a small spark.

"The real question now is somebody going to make a stupid mistake, because some kind of minor escalation could get out of hand," said Bruce Bennett, a senior defense analyst at the RAND Corporation.

"It's not so dangerous that I'm not going to go to (South) Korea in three weeks. But it is a dangerous situation that could get out of hand," said Bennett.

However, even if a strategic miscalculation happened tomorrow, many experts believe war isn't imminent.

If it was, the US armed forces would be placed on what is known as Defcon 2, according to Carl Schuster, a Hawaii Pacific University professor and former director of operations at the US Pacific Command's Joint Intelligence Center.

Schuster said such an announcement would be formal and public.

Kim Jong-Un's army readied for war as they fired rockets and torpedoes at mock enemy warships during North Korea's 'largest ever' live-fire artillery drills on Tuesday. Hundreds of tanks were lined up along the eastern coastal town of Wonsan in a show of military strength to celebrate 85 years since the North Korean army was created. Kim saluted the military as he watched the exercises on Tuesday, which involved the firing of more than 300 large-calibre artillery pieces and included submarine torpedo-attacks. Just one day later, South Korea conducted joint military live-fire drills with the US at Seungjin fire training field in Pocheon, South Korea, near the border with North Korea.

Entire U.S. Senate heads to the White House for unprecedented top-secret briefing on North Korea

Members of the Senate travel to the White House Wednesday to get a secret briefing on North Korea amid escalating tensions and North Korean threats of war.

The White House is lending its facilities for a briefing for U.S. senators about the escalating situation on North Korea. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will lead the meeting and the Senate is 'just using our space,' according to the White House. Heads of State, Defense, Director of National Intelligence, and head of Joint Chiefs to participate. Senators to travel up Pennsylvania Avenue in vans and buses. The Senate has its own secure facility inside the Capitol for classified briefings. The White House locale 'shows the cooperation of both the Senate and the White House to work together,' according to a White House spokeswoman. Tensions are high'

Members of the Senate are set to travel to the White House Wednesday in vans and buses to get a secret briefing on North Korea amid escalating tensions and North Korean threats of war.

Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell sought the briefing, although briefings like this one on highly classified subjects normally would be held inside a large, secure facility in the Capitol. Trump then offered to host the senators at the White House, in a move that put the location of the high-stakes discussion on his own turf.

'The president has made clear that a North Korea that is armed with a nuclear armed missile – a capability they have yet to test – is unacceptable to us and threatens our vital national security interest, 'McConnell said on the Senate floor Wednesday morning. Senators travel to the White House Wednesday for a classified briefing on North Korea amid high tensions with the hermetic regime

'Thus, in order to allow the Senate to better understand this threat, I asked the administration to brief all senators on the issue, and the president graciously offered to hold the meeting down at the White House. So I would encourage all our colleagues to attend this afternoon’s meeting,' McConnell said.

A spokesman for McConnell told DailyMail.com, 'The Leader requested the briefing. The White House offered to host it there and the Leader accepted.'  Given the location, members of the Senate will be seen coming to the White House, where the executive for decades has carved out supreme authority over foreign policy and military action.

U.S. Air Force launches unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from California as a test amid rising tensions with North Korea
U.S. Air Force tested an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile Wednesday. The missile launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and was headed toward a target near the Kawkalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The Air Force said in a statement the mission was part of a program to test the effectiveness, readiness, and accuracy of the weapon system. The test comes amid rising tensions with North Korea, which has been testing its own missiles.

US missile defense system to be operational in days in S.Korea -admiral
    http://news.trust.org/item/20170426144308-aqhnx
WASHINGTON, April 26 (Reuters) - A U.S. missile defense system that is being established in South Korea to defend against any North Korean attack should be operational in the coming days, Admiral Harry Harris, the top U.S. commander in the Asia-Pacific, told Congress on Wednesday.

Harris also expressed confidence the United States could defeat any North Korea missile attack on an American aircraft carrier strike group but said the United States should study placing additional missile defense capabilities in Hawaii.

Harris warned that a U.S. inflection point will come once North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has the military capabilities to match his threats to the United States, appearing to refer to Pyongyang's advancing missile and nuclear programs. (Reporting by Phil Stewart; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama

U.S. may need to strengthen defenses against North Korea threat-Admiral
    http://news.trust.org/item/20170426161755-k74pb

WASHINGTON, April 26 (Reuters) - The United States may need to strengthen its missile defenses, particularly in Hawaii, given the advancing threat from North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons programs, the top U.S. commander in the Pacific told Congress on Wednesday.

Just hours before the entire U.S. Senate was due to receive a top-level briefing on North Korea at the White House, Admiral Harry Harris testified that he believed Pyongyang's threats against the United States needed to be taken seriously.

Harris said the defenses of Hawaii were sufficient for now but could one day be overwhelmed, and suggested studying stationing new radar there as well as capabilities known as "interceptors" to knock out any incoming North Korean missiles.

"I don't share your confidence that North Korea is not going to attack either South Korea, or Japan, or the United States ... once they have the capability," Harris told a lawmaker at one point.

The testimony was the latest sobering reminder of growing U.S. alarm about North Korean capabilities, as President Donald Trump signals a willingness to use force, if needed, should diplomatic efforts fail to constrain Pyongyang.

U.S. officials have warned any near-term conflict with North Korea could have a devastating effect on ally South Korea, a point Pyongyang underscored by a big live-fire exercise on Tuesday to mark the foundation of its military.

In a sign of growing anxiety, Trump invited all 100 members of the Senate to attend a White House briefing on Wednesday with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and Marine General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The same four officials will then go to Capitol Hill to brief the entire House at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT), a senior House aide said.

    THAAD OPERATIONAL IN DAYS

Harris said the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system being deployed in South Korea would be operational in the coming days, bolstering the ability to defend the U.S. ally, and the 28,500 U.S. troops stationed there.

The U.S. military started moving parts of an anti-missile defense system to a deployment site in South Korea on Wednesday, triggering protests from villagers and criticism from China.

Beijing says the system's advanced radar can penetrate deep into its territory and undermine its security.

Harris scoffed at Chinese objections, saying he believed it was "preposterous" that Beijing would try to push South Korea against a system to defend itself, and suggested Beijing should focus more on trying to influence North Korea.

Although Harris expressed concern about North Korea's future capabilities, he downplayed some of its current threats to U.S. forces in the Pacific.

He voiced confidence, for example, that the United States could defeat any North Korea missile attack on an American aircraft carrier strike group, following threats from North Korea that he said overstated Pyongyang's capabilities.

"The weapons that North Korea would put against the Carl Vinson strike group are easily defended by the capabilities resident in that strike group," Harris said.

"If it flies it will die, if it's flying against the Carl Vinson strike group." (Additional reporting by David Brunnstrom; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama and Clive McKeef)
