Quotes from the sublime and transcendent texts of Asian and Oriental philosophy.

"Just as you do not like misery, in the same way others also do not like it.

Knowing this, you should do unto them what you want them to do unto you."

    Mahavira - Bhagavati Aradhana

Should I not warn someone if they are going the wrong way? I would want someone to do this to me.

The Vedas have totally missed the One component, therefore everything from their teachings does not point this way.

So everything is dependent on the One.

You yourself are more important then anything.

"It is difficult to meet success in the effort to insure one's own spiritual welfare, even without seeking to benefit others. If you seek another's spiritual welfare before attaining your own, it would be like a helplessly drowning man trying to save another man in the same predicament. Therefore, one should not be too anxious and hasty in setting out to save others before one has, oneself, realized Truth in Its fullness. That would be like the blind leading the blind. As long as the sky endures, there will be no dearth of sentient beings for you to serve, and your opportunity for such service will come. Till it does, I exhort each one of you to keep but one resolve: namely, to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all living creatures."

I find it amazing that one must repeat to himself, not to do harm to others all the time.

Are they worried they will forget, if they get off their path?

see demonic incarnations from hellish planets have mud in their minds and they kill, torture and eat other living creatures, so it needs to be reminded in all Kali Yugas. Nothing new under this sun.

your mind is sooooooo off to grasp it. But hey there are ones who deliver dead meat pizzas to your door.

you missed next line from that excerpt you referring to.

    and next line was:
Once a teacher sent his student to hell to bring hot charcoals from hell, but he
received answer 'we do not provide charcoals, everybody comes here
    with his own charcoals'.:)

Wisdom of the East - The Light of Asia Empty Buddha on opinions

Post  Floyd Thu Aug 30, 2012 2:59 am

"It is certainly hard to change one’s set opinions, but a man should let himself freely test all philosophical systems, adopting and rejecting them as he sees fit. But the man who is wise no longer concerns himself with this or that system (of philosophy), he neither prides nor deceives himself. He goes along his independent way."

"Reality can be experienced only with the eye of understanding, not just by a scholar. What the moon is like must be seen with one's own eyes. How can others do it for you?"

Śaṅkara - Indian philosopher of the of Advaita Vedanta tradition.

Advaita Vedanta is based on śāstra ("scriptures"), yukti ("reason") and anubhava ("experience"), and aided by karmas ("spiritual practices").[36] This philosophy provides a clear-cut way of life to be followed. Starting from childhood, when learning has to start, the philosophy has to be realised in practice throughout one's life, even up to death. This is the reason why this philosophy is called an experiential philosophy-the underlying tenet being "That thou art", meaning that ultimately there is no difference between the experiencer and the experienced (the world) as well as the universal spirit (Brahman).

"Maintain the state of undistractedness, and distractions will fly away. Dwell alone, and you shall find the Friend. Take the lowest place, and you shall reach the highest. Hasten slowly, and you shall soon arrive. Renounce all worldly goals, and you shall reach the highest Goal. If you follow this unfrequented path, you will find the shortest way. If you realize Sunyata (the absolute Emptiness), compassion will arise within your hearts; and when you lose all differentiation between yourself and others, then you will be fit to serve others".
