I'll kick it off. I learned by myself and made music from 1991 to 2003, and I loved it. I was never a good musician and I always played alone. I have some kind of attention disorder. I undertsand (and feel) music very well, but I just can't play well. Thanks to technology, that didn't stop me from creating. I just liked putting notes together like Lego blocks. I never made 2 pieces of the same style.

I'll have a listen when my computer isn't so darn slow... It's great that you persevered, metaw. Many musicians seem to have some sort of difference to the norm .

I wish I played something, but my boyfriend says I am an EXCELLENT critic
Here he is playing congas, african stylee He loves it when the counter numbers go up. I love a simple man, and he can play:

If you like celtic style with hot violin, his other band is pretty good but not entirely my bag.

Love it. It's balanced and lighthearted. Don't expect that in my music. Expect peculiar, yet melodic, harmonic progressions.

I listened to the fugue (stakeout), very awesome stuff man. I can tell you studied theory at the very least. Quite the complex theme for a fugue.

    What program do you use?

I fool around with sebelius now and then.

Anyways I'll check out the rest later on, looking forward to it. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you mudra and Iysun777.

I'm glad you like The Stakeout Iysun777, it's my favorite. The theme is an original meldoy where I go through 10 of the 12 chromatic notes in just 4 bars. That was the challenge to make a fugue out of it. The structure, at least in the exposition, is inspired by the Fugue in C minor from WTC 1. Here is the MIDI file:
    https://ishare.sphorium.com/ms/link.aspx?pr...3b-a88998eb8df3

I've read a few books about theory. At the very beginning in 1991 I had a guitar teacher for a few months. He was a Steve Vai fan and he introduced me to Greek scales and polymodal music. I fell in love with modes and modulations. I started with 2 or three modulations in the same piece, using Greek scales, and ended up in 2003 with a tonicization-like style. Prelude is my last experiment with modulations.

I started with Voyetra in DOS, then Cubase with Windows 3.11, and at the end I was just using an old version of GVOX Encore, because I was only interested in Bach's Well Tempered Clavier. So no need for a bloated software like Cubase had turned into. I don't play nor compose music since 2003.

I never focused on theory and arrangments too much. I don't know why but I had the superstitious belief that if I tried too hard to be good at arrangements and theory, I would end up being satisfied of 'boring' music that sounds 'like it should'. Of course it's not true.

Hi metaw3, I'm totally the same way, though you're definitely more talented than me. I've been goofing around on the banjo and mandolin for ahwile now, but I pretty much won't play for anybody yet, i get too nervous and can't play like if it's just me.

Good stuf btw, I liked the Robbery best probably.

You should check out this guy Ronald Jenkees, I bet you'd like him. He's goofy, but really cool and really talented. He's got a bunch of youtube vids. Here's a good one.

I grew up with music in our house. My mother was quite the piano player, she spent hours at the piano each day. Too bad it was not passed down to us.

Yes tacodog, having musicians in the house must be great. I didn't have that chance. In fact, there is no other musician in both sides of my family.

lazy_lightning this Jenkees guy is merry! I love his energy. Very refreshing.

    thanks everyone, great thread.
metaw, attention disorder?? I think not, very complex stuff and love the images used, I'm a sucker for Frank Zappa and loved the flower of light image.
Thanks for compliments re bongoboy and band, if you like that, Here is their my space and I genuinely love the track you can click on called " Butterfly," very moving to me. A finely tuned emotional soundscape within that genre. Pete is indeed a fine fiddle player of great range.

Hope I don't need to say I'm not selling anything, I just feel music is essential, especially now.

I know what you mean Metaw3 I was like that with theory and such as well. I was scared I might get assimilated or something.

But yes as always, it was just another one of those evil 'I's to dissolve.

I can't remember who made this quote but I thought it funny, it was something like:
"The trick about music theory is to forget everything you leanred after you mastered it."

I'm not sure. I started programming games and websites and it worked out better than composing. Also, my understanding of music was always improving, yet I was making little to no progress at performing, even after 10 years. That was frustrating.

I'm listening to gigspanner, anomalous cowherd. Yes this is a genre I like. Thank you.
