SOLAR SECTOR BOUNDARY CROSSING: Earth is about to cross a fold in the heliospheric current sheet--a vast wavy structure in interplanetary space separating regions of opposite magnetic polarity. The crossing, called a "solar sector boundary crossing," is expected on May 11th and could trigger geomagnetic activity around Earth's poles.

COMET SWAN VS THE SOLAR WIND: A struggle is underway in interplanetary space. The contestants are Comet SWAN (C/2020 F8) vs. the solar wind. The comet has an extremely long tail--wider then 20 full Moons--and this gives it lots of exposure to the solar wind. The result is evident in this extraordinary image from Gerald Rhemann of Farm Tivoli, Namibia:

Comet SWAN's tail is beautiful -- and a mess, interrupted by many gaps, knots, and billowing clouds. The solar wind is to blame. Irregularities in the solar wind impress themselves onto Comet SWAN, creating the structures in Rhemann's image. The comet is, essentially, a wind sock.

There are even signs of a possible magnetic storm. Magnetic storms in comet tails have been observed before--most famously in 2007 when NASA's STEREO spacecraft watched a CME crash into Comet Encke. Encke's tail was ripped into forms like this dramatic kink in the tail of Comet SWAN:

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 18 Kink_strip

How could this happen? Magnetic fields around the comet bumped into oppositely directed magnetic fields in the solar wind. Suddenly, these fields linked together--they "reconnected"--releasing a burst of energy that disrupted the comet's tail.

Clearly, Comet SWAN is worth watching.

Some states in New England, including Vermont (pictured), received snow this weekend after a polar vortex blew in from Canada

Polar Vortex howls in and blasts northeastern US with 12 INCHES of snow predicted and all-time record low temperatures for May set to be broken

Polar Vortex has blasted into the northeast with record low temperatures, winds and snow. Mt. Washington has a low of just 10 degrees, while Death Valley, California, is could reach 110 degrees.

A polar vortex arrived in the northeast United States from Canada this weekend

Several states in New England received chilly temperatures, wind and unexpected snow in the midst of May

More than 100 record low temperatures for May could potentially be broken this weekend

New York received snow in Central Park and in the upstate region on Saturday

New Hampshire's record for latest snowfall was May 13, 1914 and Saturday could see six inches of snow

Vermont received as much as nine inches of snow in Shaftsbury

The temperature difference between the East Coast and the West Coast will almost be 100 degrees

Death Valley, California, will reach a high of 100 degrees on Saturday while Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, has a high of 10 degrees

A Polar Vortex has blasted into the northeast with record low temperatures, gusty winds and a potential to drop up to 12 inches of snow in New England.

The unusual May weather on the East Coast will be nearly 100 degrees colder than the Mother's Day weekend weather on the West Coast.

And snow was detected in New York City's Central Park on Saturday, equaling a record set in 1977 for the latest snowfall of the year.

The National Weather Service revealed on Thursday that the northeast would see an unexpected drop in temperature as polar air blew in from  Canada.

Atlanta, Georgia, will be cooler than Fairbank, Alaska, on Saturday.

'The fact that it’s pushing so far south is what’s unusual about it,' Accuweather meteorologist Tom Kine told the New York Post.

'It’s just Mother Nature not being nice. She was nice most of the winter because we didn’t have to deal with any snow or anything, maybe she’s getting even.'

Additionally, a second storm coming in from Pennsylvania will help the polar vortex push further into the southeast.

The Northern Plains and Upper Midwest will see temperatures up to 25 degrees below normal seasonal weather, which is in the 60s.

A map from the National Weather Service shows the stark contrast in temperature between the East Coast and the West Coast.

High winds and heavy rain knock out power to 35,000 in New England as tornado watches are issued for Northeast and flash floods soak parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas

Storms brought heavy rains and wind to the Northeastern US late Friday and early Saturday while Texas and Kansas prepare for possible flash floods as more severe weather is forecast. Tropical storm system is developing off Florida coast, drenching Sunshine State.

New Hampshire authorities reported that around 3,000 residents were without power while Vermont had nearly 3,800 customers who had no electricity as of early Saturday morning.

In some parts of the region, wind gusts reached 56mph. There were also several reports of downed trees and wires in residential areas, according to MassLive.

Tornado warnings were also in effect for southern Vermont and New Hampshire.

Residents of Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island all received severe thunderstorm alerts on their cell phones, according to NBC Boston.

Meteorologists said that the severe weather in the New England area is due to the low pressure system formed as a result of the unseasonably warm temperatures recorded on Thursday and Friday.

Severe weather was also observed in the Hudson Valley region of New York State, parts of which were under a tornado watch.

Ulster County was under a tornado warning until 8pm while Dutchess County was under a tornado warning until 10pm.

Wind gusts reached 50mph in some parts of the Hudson Valley on Friday.

Meanwhile, the air over the Gulf of Mexico region is particularly moist, creating the conditions for even more severe weather after a week of heavy rains resulted in flash flooding in parts of the southern Plains including Texas, Kansas, and Louisiana.

Some cars were stranded in several inches of water near Houston as flash floods inundated parts of the Lone Star State on Friday.

In neighboring Oklahoma, at least 5,000 people were left without power as severe storms led to flash flooding.

Midwest is hit by flooding as Chicago River burst its banks and Michigan residents are evacuated
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8336753/Flooding-hits-parts-Midwest-evacuations-Michigan.html

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for locations along the Tittabawassee River after the breach at the Edenville Dam in Midland County, about 140 miles (225.31 kilometers) north of Detroit
Two dams have burst after several days of heavy rainfall Tuesday forcing the evacuation of around 10,000 people in mid-Michigan, where the governor said one county could be 'under approximately 9 feet of water' by Wednesday morning.

For the second time in less than 24 hours, families living along two lakes and a river were ordered Tuesday to leave home.

The evacuations in Michigan followed days of heavy rains in parts of the Midwest that also brought flooding to Chicago and other parts of Illinois, Ohio and other states.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for locations along the Tittabawassee River after the breach at the Edenville Dam in Midland County, about 140 miles (225.31 kilometers) north of Detroit and the Sanford Dam, about seven miles (11.26 kilometers) downriver from Edenville.

'Extremely dangerous flash flooding is ongoing along the Tittabawassee River in Midland county due to catastrophic dam failures at the Edenville and Sanford dams,' the weather service said on its website, noting that anyone near the river should seek higher ground immediately, be prepared for immediate evacuations, and not drive into flooded roadways.

'This flooding will continue all along the length of the river in Midland county, and possibly extending into Saginaw county where a Flash Flood Watch is also in effect.'

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer late Tuesday declared a state of emergency for Midland County and urged residents threatened by the flooding to evacuate the area. She said shelters have opened across the county and are available to residents who need a place to go.

'This is unlike anything we've seen in Midland County,' she said. 'If you have a family member or loved one who lives in another part of the state, go there now.'

Whitmer said downtown Midland faced an especially serious flooding threat. 'In the next 12 to 15 hours, downtown Midland could be under approximately 9 feet of water. We are anticipating an historic high water level.'

Emergency responders went door-to-door early Tuesday morning warning residents living near the Edenville Dam of the rising water. Some residents were able to return home, only to be told to leave again following the dam's breach.

The evacuations include the towns of Edenville, Sanford and parts of the city of Midland, which has 42,000 people, according to Selina Tisdale, spokeswoman for Midland County.

'People are communicating well and looking after each other and their loved ones,' Tisdale said. 'We´re heartbroken for those with lots of home and property damage.'

Edenville Dam holds back Wixom Lake. Officials also were watching the Sanford Dam south of Edenville. The city of Midland, which includes the main plant of Dow Chemical, sits on the banks of the Tittabawassee River about 8 miles (12.87 kilometers) away from that dam.

Dow Chemical Co. has activated its emergency operations center and will be adjusting operations as a result of current flood stage conditions, spokeswoman Rachelle Schikorra said in an email.

    7.4 EQ in New Zealand

    https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000ae4n/executive

    Tectonic Summary

The June 18, 2020, M 7.4 Kermadec Islands region earthquake occurred as the result of shallow strike slip faulting near the Kermadec Trench where the Pacific plate begins its descent into the mantle beneath the eastern edge of the Australia plate. Focal mechanism solutions indicate that rupture occurred on a steeply dipping fault striking either to the southwest (left-lateral) or to the southeast (right-lateral). At the location of this earthquake, the Pacific plate is converging with Australia in a westward direction at a velocity of about 55 mm/yr. The focal mechanism solution and depth (about 30 km) of the event suggest that it ruptured a strike slip fault within the shallow oceanic lithosphere of the Pacific plate; the location suggests a source near the trench, within the oceanic plate near the outer rise region. While commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. Strike slip events of the size of the June 18, 2020, earthquake are typically about 110x20 km (length x width).

The June 18th earthquake struck in an oceanic region with few nearby populations, approximately 650 km to north of Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. This region of the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone experiences high levels of seismic activity, with nearly 20 events of M 6.5+ over the past half century within 250 km of the June 18 event. While M7+ earthquakes along the Kermadec Arc are generally common, this section of the subduction zone has hosted just one such event, a M 7.4 earthquake in May 2006 at an intermediate depth within the subducting Pacific slab to the west of today’s earthquake. No historic seismicity in this region is known to have resulted in damage or casualties.

Tropical System Could Bring Heavy Rainfall To New York City

Chances are, as early as Thursday, the 2020 hurricane season could get its sixth tropical system - now forming offshore of the North Carolina Outer Banks and likely headed to New York City.

Earlier this week, the National Hurricane Center (NWS) had a 70% probability the storm would develop into a tropical system. If that is the case, within the next 24-hours, winds would have to sustain 39 mph to become Tropical Storm Fay.

    NWS Weather Note

"Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for development and a tropical or subtropical cyclone is likely to form within the next day or so," NWS said.

The system began forming over the Florida Panhandle on Monday. Several weather models suggest the storm could track up the East Coast in the coming days, eventually striking New York City.

"We've been watching the center of this system move across Georgia and the Carolinas for a few days now," CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said. "As the center moves offshore of North Carolina and hugs the coast, it will be able to tap into the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and could become a tropical storm."

Evacuations In China As Hubei Dam Begins to Slide; Cities Issue Red Alert on Floods

In Hubei province of China, close to 29,000 citizens were evacuated as a nearby reservoir dam is showing signs of deformation, and began to slide.

The incident is taking place amid continuing heavy rains in China. Near the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, which has been overflowing as well, the water level at the BaiYange Reservoir in HuangGang City of Hubei rose to dangerous levels, and the dam began to slide and to show signs of deformation, putting an area of over 620 square miles at risk. The reservoir was built in 1958, spans several villages, and can hold around 78 million cubic feet of water.

And in other parts of China, reservoirs impacted by floods are making the floodwaters worse. By July 5, around 1,094 reservoirs just in Hubei had exceeded their limits, and more than 11 counties and cities including Wuhan, the epicenter of the CCP Virus, the new coronavirus, issued red-code flood warnings. One other city, Xiantao, also evacuated its residents in the middle of the night.

Tropical Storm Fay is set to batter NYC on Friday

    Published: 01:26 EDT, 10 July 2020 |

Tropical Storm Fay, the sixth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, is set to batter on Friday, bringing the potential for flash floods and sustained 50mph winds for at least 12 hours as the system follows a similar path as Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Fay began to edge away from the North Carolina coast Thursday evening with its sights set on the mid-Atlantic coast and southern New England.

The US National Hurricane Center () in Miami said in its 11pm advisory that Fay was moving toward the north at about 8mph but was expected to have a faster forward speed over the next couple of days.

The storm was located Thursday night about 85 miles north, northeast of Cape Hatteras and had top sustained winds of 45mph.

A flash flood watch was already in place for parts of New Jersey as of Thursday night.

The NWS said a flash flood watch will be in effect starting Friday morning through Friday evening.

A high surf advisory was also issued for parts of Brooklyn and Queens beginning 6am Friday to Friday at 9pm.

The NWS said that large breaking waves of three to six feet are expected in the surf zone as well as high rip currents.

According to the NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, there is a chance that Fay could cause thunderstorms with brief tornadoes Friday into Friday night from New Jersey to southern New England.

Fay's formation Thursday means it is the earliest sixth-named storm on record, according to Colorado State University hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach.

The previous record was Franklin on July 22, 2005, Klotzbach tweeted.

Two named storms formed before the official June 1 start of the hurricane season. None of this season's previous five named storms strengthened into hurricanes.

Superstorm Sandy: The hybrid storm that killed 182 people in the US and Caribbean

What was meant to be a fun-filled Halloween season for New Yorkers in 2012 turned into a nightmare when Superstorm Sandy hit the tri-state area - causing massive flooding and more than $19billion in damage.

The storm was the most destructive and deadliest for the Atlantic hurricane season that year, as it also affected Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republica before making its way up the eastern seaboard.

The former hurricane merged with other systems to create a meteorological hybrid storm.

Extreme "Heat Dome" To Fry US With Record Temperatures Up To 121F For Several Weeks
    https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/extreme-heat-dome-fry-us-record-temperatures-121f-several-weeks

It was only to be expected that in an already brutal year, the summer of 2020 was going to be the absolute worst.

What this means is that over 80 percent of the U.S. population – encompassing 265 million people – can expect sweltering heat over the next week with highs exceeding 90. Another 45 million people will be facing highs in the triple digits.

Additionally, we can expect a full season of lethal heat ranging from 90°F to 121°F, not to mention extreme tropical storms, wildfires, and extreme weather related to La Niña conditions, reports the Independent.

On Friday, the National Weather Service issued excessive heat watch alerts for “dangerously hot conditions” and forecast that between Friday and Tuesday, over 75 record high temperatures would be reached or exceeded, with heat expected to increase in the following week.

    National Weather Service
    @NWS
Summer is in full swing! Tropical Storm Fay formed in the Atlantic. Thunderstorms, some severe, in the Plains and Upper Midwest. Excessive heat up to 121 F possible in the Desert Southwest into early next week. Critical fire weather threats continue for portions of the West.

On Saturday, temperature in Las Vegas reached a sweltering 112°F with the temperature expected to increase to 114°F on Sunday, while in Phoenix temperatures hit 115°F with Sunday expected to bring a withering 116°F before coasting at or above 110°F through the next week.

Chinese state media announced on Sunday that it blasted holes in the Chuhe River dam in order to “alleviate the pressure of flood control” at the massive Three Gorges Dam, which is straining under the pressure from flooding of the mighty Yangtze River.

While Chinese media strove to portray the controlled demolition of the lesser dam as routine and the situation at Three Gorges as completely under control, outside observers are worried the gigantic Three Gorges Dam – the largest hydroelectric power plant in the world – will be unable to contain the pressure from floods that have killed hundreds of people. If the Three Gorges Dam fails, an unprecedented humanitarian and economic catastrophe could result.

Forbes on Sunday reported that Three Gorges is “buckling under the strain of massive flows of water” from a number of other dams on tributary rivers at higher elevations as higher-than-normal rainfall produces what some in China describe as the worst flooding in a century. Over 400 of the Yangtze River’s many tributaries are overflowing, the floods have killed almost 200 people, and projected economic damage stands at over $12 billion dollars.

The Chinese regime reported another 14 dead in flooding upstream of the Three Gorges Dam over the weekend, while rising floodwaters and landslides forced the evacuation of over 20,000 more people and destruction of over a thousand homes. The total number of people the floods displaced during this monsoon season is approaching 2 million.

All of those problems will grow exponentially worse if the Three Gorges Dam cracks. Chinese troops and disaster relief personnel have been racing to contain the smaller floods leading into the Yangtze, with fingers crossed that rainfall will begin abating this week. At least one more major surge of river water is expected to hit the dam in the next few days.

Chinese media strove to portray the demolition of the lesser dam on the Chuhe River in Anhui province as a routine procedure, but Forbes cited some reports that the dam was “blown to bits with explosives” rather than being poked with a few holes to relieve some water pressure.

Taiwan News noted that widespread demolition of dams and embankments is a flood control tactic the Chinese have not resorted to since 1998. Judging by Chinese state media accounts, the tactic appears to have worked, because the level of flood water hitting the Three Gorges Dam dropped by about 25 percent on Sunday, allowing the water to pass through the dam’s discharge system “smoothly.”

China’s Global Times claimed the Three Gorges Dam “has largely eased flood prevention pressure in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River,” providing vital relief to areas that would otherwise experience “intensive” flooding.

The Global Times disputed foreign observers who worried that Three Gorges is not up to the task of holding back such a massive amount of floodwater, accusing them of harboring anti-Chinese bias and nefarious political motivations:

The Three Gorges project has come into the spotlight recently. A Tuesday report from Reuters quoted a geographer as saying that “the Three Gorges Dam reservoir does not have the capacity to significantly affect the most severe floods.”

However, the Three Gorges project’s duty of flood prevention is mostly based in the Chenglingji region, which is located at the exit of Dongting Lake. With a reservoir capacity for floodwater at 22 billion cubic meters, it is designed to prevent huge floods in the upper stream of the Yangtze River with the Three Gorges Dam working significantly to prevent such a situation spiraling out of control, the Three Gorges Dam Corporation said in the statement.

If flooding occurred via heavy rainfall in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the cities surrounding these reaches would have to mainly rely on their own flood drainage facilities. Under such circumstances, the Three Gorges Dam can still make a contribution by retaining and impounding water to ease the pressure on those cities.

Exaggerating the Three Gorges Dam’s “distortion” has also been somewhat of a cliché for certain overseas media outlets. In response to this cliché, the statement from the company noted that currently, the Three Gorges Dam is running safely in a good condition. During the past few years, there has been no so-called distortion occurring, or any other noteworthy risks.

    A bit of Tounge-in-cheek humor

CME IMPACT POSSIBLE THIS WEEK: On July 19th, a faint CME left the sun. NOAA analysts believe the plasma cloud could graze Earth's magnetic field on July 24th or 25th. A similar slow-moving CME hit Earth on July 13th, causing high-latitude auroras and a surprise visit from STEVE. Aurora alerts: SMS Text.

A NEW SUNSPOT (UPDATED): A sunspot has appeared and, according to its magnetic polarity, it is a member of new Solar Cycle 25. The sunspot's Earth-sized dark core is inset in this magnetic map from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 18 Magnetogram_strip2

This new spot is another sign of life from strengthening Solar Cycle 25. So far this year there have been 13 sunspots--ten of them (77%) coming from the new solar cycle. This compares to only 17% in 2019 and 0% in 2018. The sun is clearly tipping from one solar cycle to the next.

So far this sunspot has been quiet. It has a simple, stable magnetic field that appears to harbor little free energy for strong solar flares.

Horrifying footage shows cars driving through the raging flames of the Hennessey Fire in Napa County Friday
A dashcam has captured people making the terrifying drive through the California wildfires that have now killed six with two of the blazes now in the top ten biggest ever seen in the state, as Governor Newsom pleads with Canada and Australia to send help.

Horrifying footage showed the scenes from a car driving through the raging flames of the Hennessey Fire in Napa County as heavy smoke filled the air and burning trees overhead dangerously threatened to topple.

At least six people have been killed as a staggering 560 fires continue to spread uncontrollably across the state of California.

More than 771,000 acres have been destroyed - bigger than the whole state of Rhode Island - as the wildfires wipe out homes, trees and entire neighborhoods that they find in their paths.

Much of the destruction can be put down to two massive blazes - the SCU Lightning Complex and the LNU Lightning Complex - which officials today said have grown to some of the largest ever seen in the state's history.

As the almost 12,000 firefighters drafted in to tackle the wildfires struggle to bring the burgeoning crisis under control, the governor issued an SOS call to other leaders and nations to help save the Golden State.

This comes as 14 other US states are now grappling with wildfires on their own land and as smoke pollution from California billows as far as Nebraska.

We had wondered if some of the lightening was due to DEW (direct energy weapons) as starting fires in strategic areas.

Here is the video from Dutchsense that shows the current 560 Cali fires are along fault lines and almost all appear to have a small earthquake associated with each fire. He also states that there is drilling done at most of these spots, ie they drill, then quake & fire. Does this indicate that someone is triggering a major earthquake and/or volcanic eruption such as Long Valley in Cali?

He also states that people have seen magma at the fault lines and ground to air lightning. Is ground to air lightning plasma?

This may precede a major earthquake for the West coast.

Watch this video starting at about the 13 minute time stamp: https://youtu.be/xh3yfQViDpY

Louisiana residents flee as the state braces for back-to-back Tropical Storms Marco and Laura

Residents of Louisiana were seen getting food supplies and filling vehicles with gas in preparation for storms
Louisiana residents prepared to flee the state as Tropical Storm Marco approached for an expected landfall around midday Monday, while Tropical Storm Laura is forecast to move along Cuba's southern coast during the day before entering the Gulf of Mexico.

The Gulf Coast braced for a history-making onslaught from the twin storms, with many evacuees recalling the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when catastrophic flooding breached the levees in New Orleans and as many as 1,800 people died.

'What we know is there's going to be storm surge from Marco, we know that that water is not going to recede hardly at all before Laura hits, and so we've not seen this before and that's why people need to be paying particular attention,' Gov John Bel Edwards warned at a Sunday briefing.

Marco had grown into a hurricane early Sunday, but the National Hurricane Center said its sustained winds decreased to 70mph after nightfall.

The center cautioned that Marco could still cause life-threatening storm surges and dangerous winds along the Gulf Coast. Marco was centered about 115 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River land heading northwest at 10mph Monday morning.

Forecasters have also issued a tropical storm warning for parts of the Florida Keys as Tropical Storm Laura makes its way through the Caribbean. The warning affects the middle and lower Keys from Craig Key to Key West.

Robert Nguyen buys gas for his generator in Port Sulphur, Louisiana, on Sunday in advance of Marco, which is expected to make landfall on Monday

Paul Humphrey, of New Orleans, loads plywood into his truck, to board a friend's home in preparation for the arrival of storms Marco and Laura

Workers board up shops in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Sunday in advance of Tropical Storm Marco, which is expected to make landfall on the Southern Louisiana coast

Workers board up shops in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Sunday in advance of Tropical Storm Marco, which is expected to make landfall on the Southern Louisiana coast

According to the National Weather Service, tropical-storm-force winds are expected in the lower and middle Keys later Monday, 'particularly during squalls associated with passing rain bands'. The area may also see winds ranging between 25 to 35mph and gusts as high as 45 to 50mph in squalls.

Texas is also under a tropical storm warning as forecasters predict that Tropical Storm Laura could bring a significant amount of storm surge, strong winds and flooding rainfall to parts of the Louisiana and Texas coasts later this week.

According to Weather.com, the center of Laura is most likely to make landfall somewhere from the upper Texas coast to the southwest or central Louisiana coast.

Despite Marco's weakening, a storm surge warning remained in place from Morgan City, Louisiana, to Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

A tropical storm warning included Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana, and metropolitan New Orleans. A storm surge of up to 4 feet was forecast for parts of coastal Louisiana and Mississippi.

Along the main drag on the barrier island of Grand Isle, south of New Orleans, Starfish Restaurant manager Nicole Fantiny could see an exodus of people driving off the island. 'They are all packing up and leaving,' she said.

Fantiny wasn't planning to leave, at least for Marco, but she was anxious about the possible one-two punch from both storms. Her husband works with the town´s fire and police departments, so she said they are always among the last ones to leave. 'My house was built in 1938 so I think we're good,' she said hopefully.

Meanwhile, Laura was centered about 175 miles east-southeast of Cayo Largo on Monday morning, and had maximum sustained winds of 65mph.

It was moving west-northwest at 21mph and was predicted to strengthen into a hurricane by Tuesday morning as it followed a path likely to take it to the Louisiana coast by Wednesday night, forecasters said.

Experts said computer models show Laura could make landfall with winds exceeding 110mph, and rain bands from both storms could bring a combined total of two feet of rain to parts of Louisiana and several feet of potentially deadly storm surge.

'There has never been anything we've seen like this before, where you can have possibly two hurricanes hitting within miles of each over a 48-hour period,' said Benjamin Schott, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service's Slidell, Louisiana, office.

The combination of the rain and storm surge in a day or two means 'you're looking at a potential for a major flood event that lasts for some time,' said weather service tropical program coordinator Joel Cline. 'And that's not even talking about the wind.'

Marco had grown into a hurricane early Sunday, but the National Hurricane Center said its sustained winds decreased to 70mph after nightfall

Forecasters cautioned that Marco could still cause life-threatening storm surges and dangerous winds along the Gulf Coast. New Orleans, Morgan City and other parts of Louisiana were under a tropical storm warning as of Monday morning

President Donald Trump approved Louisiana's request for federal help related to the pair of storms, Gov Edwards said in a news release Sunday.

He had submitted the request to Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Agency on Saturday.

Trump also approved an emergency declaration for Mississippi, according to a White House news release late Sunday.

University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy warned that anyone in New Orleans should be alarmed by the threat. At issue from possible dual hits: whether the levee system can withstand the stress, he said.

In New Orleans, the city's aging drainage system has been a particular point of concern in recent years after an intense 2017 storm flooded streets and raised questions about the system's viability.

Because the city is surrounded by levees and parts are below sea level, rainwater must be pumped out to prevent flooding. Any storm system that sits over the city and dumps rain for extended periods of time, or bands of rain that come in rapid succession, is a cause for concern.

New Orleans resident Matthew Meloy and two friends loaded a van with cases of bottled water in the parking lot of a New Orleans Walmart Sunday. He said they still have a lot of storm preparations ahead.

Meanwhile, Laura continued to brew about 175 miles east-southeast of Cayo Largo on Monday morning, and had maximum sustained winds of 65mph

Hurricane Laura could 'turbo-charge' into 115mph Category 3 storm before hitting Texas and Louisiana

Hurricane Laura is forecast to 'turbo-charge' into a devastating Category 3 storm bringing with it 115mph winds and 13-foot storm surges.

On Tuesday Laura strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane and by evening was moving west-northwest at 17mph about 465 miles southeast of Galveston, and 435 miles southeast of Lake Charles Louisiana, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The hurricane is only rapidly intensifying as it enters the warm waters of the Gulf of and is forecast to make landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday.

More than 500,000 people have been ordered to evacuate in Texas and Louisiana, where states of emergencies have been declared, marking the largest US evacuation amid the pandemic.

In Beaumont, Galveston and Port Arthur, Texas more than 385,000 residents were told to flee. In the low-lying Calcasieu Parish in southwestern Louisiana another 200,000 were ordered to flee.

Officials say the storm surges and downpour of rain could leave an area the size of Rhode Island in Louisiana underwater.

Forecasts say powerful storm surges of 13 feet could submerge entire communities in Louisiana.

'The waters are warm enough everywhere there to support a major hurricane, Category 3 or even higher. The waters are very warm where the storm is now and will be for the entire path up until the Gulf Coast,' National Hurricane Center Deputy Director Ed Rappaport said.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said Laura is starting to look similar to Hurricane Rita, which ravaged southwest Louisiana 15 years ago.

'We’re going to have significant flooding in places that don’t normally see it,' he said.

Ocean water is expected to push onto land along more than 450 miles of coast from Texas to Mississippi. Louisiana is bracing for as much as 15 inches of rain in some parts.

Hurricane warnings were issued from San Luis Pass, Texas, to Intracoastal City, Louisiana, and storm surge warnings from the Port Arthur, Texas, flood protection system to the mouth of the Mississippi River.

Edwards is telling residents of southwest Louisiana they need to be in the location where they intend to ride out Laura by Wednesday at noon – when the state will start to feel the storm’s effects.
