I'm still looking for versions of the Bach's piece. I keep finding better versions that I push in the first 10 positions of the playlist, leaving the rest in the order I found them. I just found Gould's version used in the movie Slaughterhouse-Five, one of my favorite movies, based on a Vonnegut's novel. It's in this movie that I heard this piece for the first time when I was a child in the seventies. It made a very strong impression on me, but I forgot about it, both the music and the movie. Later in my twenties I rewatched the movie, unnderstood it better, and fell in love with the music.

Another piece that made a very strong (metaphysical) impression on me when I was young is Ennio Morricone's theme from the movie Once Upon A Time In The West:

I would go as far as to say that these 2 movies and pieces of music reached me so deep inside when I was a kid that they defined my whole life.

Thank you mudra. That was beautifully played indeed. It was a real treat to hear all these great musicians together when they were young.

When I listen to Schubert, I always expect the sustained and logical drama of his Ave Maria and I'm not getting it. Same with Mendelssohn and his wedding march. In the case of Schubert, it's like he was using his melodic genius to homogenize a lot of distilled ideas into each work. Perhaps with the more restrictive genre of the Lied in regard to this tendancy, he was somehow refrained from doing it there and that's why people relate more to his songs.

This video helped me understand why great musicians like to play Schubert together.

I agree with you about Gould's version it is brilliant .

I read the synopsis of SlaughterHouse 5 , watched the trailer and felt like seeing it .They did'nt have it in the video shop though.I noticed it's hard to find . Good movies have become rare .
I wondered one day if I would keep them in a library how many would I really still want to watch over again . I found out I could count them on the fingers of my hands .
One of those I have loved when I was young is Doctor Jivago . Through it I discovered former times Russia . It struck a chord in me . I tried to watch it again last year but somehow it was'nt the same anylonger .Some experiences we can only live once.

I believe he is not well known . I think he plays beautifully though.

I understand what you mean.Now what I realized by watching this documentary is that top musicians when they come together could hardly play any piece of music and make it sound incredible .They were able to capture my full interest and attention to a composition I would'nt be specially be attracted otherwise. These were true magicians .They played with such ease and joy in their heart .

I spend several hours today searching for another version as the one you gave me was stalling every 10 seconds. That's has been a trial and error time really but well worth it ! I must say I completely loved that movie metaw. It's so rich on so many levels . I do understand you counting it amongst your favorite ones. I am still smiling as it's been a long I had 'nt seen such a brilliant piece .

The film "24 Preludes for a Fugue" is definitely one of the year’s best due to its extraordinary intimacy, naturalness and simplicity. This is all conveyed so easily, comfortably and lightly, that you get the feeling that the filmmaker didn’t have any other worries except deciding when to turn on the camera. Even though, in reality, the shots are edited together from different times and the material was filmed in different years. In Dorian Supin’s film "And then came the evening and then the morning", Arvo Pärt expresses the thought that music exists in the world, even without any composers, just as a sculpture is hidden inside every stone. Just as a sculptor frees the sculpture from the stone, he frees music as if he were peeling a potato, the performer places it into a pot and carries it onto the stage. But in order to do this, you have to find the place, inside this "stone", where the music is hiding. Only this will cause the listener’s ears to hear and their eyes to see.

No . I did'nt try to understand him . I let go of the meaning of the words and paid attention to the melody of his expressions. I wanted to know more of this man and enter his universe. I liked the scene where he is sitting alone in a patio and listens to the rain . I could hear the notes he was hearing in it and how that moment was a source of inspiration to him .I think he is an uncomplicated being allowing for the purity of his music .He seems to carry these notes around him ..You can almost hear them . I believe he sees the universe as an unending flow of music.

It's a wonderful experience to discover a composer we like and go through his oeuvre. I too love this composer and I still have to hear most of his oeuvre. I might never get to see this movie in a language I understand and I don't want to miss it so I'll give it a try.
