Yemen protesters: 'First Mubarak, now Ali'

Sanaa, Yemen (CNN) -- Hundreds of anti-government protesters marched toward a presidential palace in Yemen on Sunday, calling for regime change in the Middle Eastern country.
Some of them chanted, "First Mubarak, now Ali," referring to Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and Hosni Mubarak, who recently resigned as president of Egypt after nearly 30 years in power.
Security forces put up a barbed wire barricade and blocked the protesters' path about two miles from the palace. At that point, the situation intensified as protesters turned away and attempted to reach the palace through side streets.
Clashes between protesters and police were reported by witnesses.
According to Tawakkol Karman, a prominent Yemeni rights activist and president of Women Journalists Without Chains, anti-riot police then "went into the crowd of protesters with batons and tasers," attempting to disperse them. Karman said she and other protesters were hit with sticks and that at least 12 people were arrested.

Senior officers at the Permanent Joint Planning Headquarters, a military command centre in Northwood, are preparing a series of options to evacuate members of the armed forces, consular staff and civilians based in the Arab state if the security situation continues to deteriorate.

Members of the Joint Force Headquarters, the organisation that planned the special forces rescue operation in Libya, have been given the task of ensuring that the evacuation operation can be initiated at short notice.

It is understood that military planners have already secured several of civilian airliners which could be used to conduct the Non-combatant Evacuation Operation (NEO) if the violence, which has claimed more than 30 lives, escalates.

Britain has a counter-terrorist training team based in the country, while the United States has a much larger force, composed of regular and special forces, as well as a large CIA contingent.

Sources have revealed that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is determined not to be “caught cold” if the country follows Libya and descends into chaos.

Beleaguered Yemen president Ali Abdullah Saleh has ordered a state of emergency after regime loyalists killed at least 41 protesters in the deadliest incident in weeks of unrest, according to medics.

Witnesses said pro-Saleh 'thugs' on Friday rained bullets from rooftops around a square at Sanaa University, the centre of demonstrations against Saleh, adding that more than 200 people were wounded.

An AFP correspondent saw protesters rush into the surrounding buildings and throw six alleged gunmen from the rooftops.

A 14-year-old boy was shot in the head in front of him.

'We were protesting peacefully and they shot at us. I won't leave this place until the president goes, even if I have to die,' said one demonstrator, Ahmad, 25.

US President Barack Obama strongly condemned the violence, calling on on his key anti-terror ally to live up to a pledge to allow peaceful protests and engage with the opposition.

Four explosions have been heard in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, as fighting worsens across the country and security forces continue their clampdown on anti-government protesters.

Information about the blasts, reported late on Monday, was sketchy, but Jamila Rajaa, an activist in Yemen, told Al Jazeera “it seems that there have not been any casualties”.

Sanaa also was the scene of fresh clashes between Yemeni security forces and supporters of Sadiq al-Ahmar, the leader of the powerful Hashad tribe, sources told Al Jazeera.

The fighting, near al-Ahmar’s residence, came a day after a ceasefire was declared between him and Ali Abdullah Saleh, the country’s embattled president.

Dozens have been killed across the country in the last 24 hours.

At least 30 people were reportedly killed by military-jet fire in the southern city of Zinjibar, which is said to be controlled fighters linked to al-Qaeda.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh survived a severe attack on his compound Friday, according to government officials, and was expected to make an address to the nation within hours as pitched battles erupted around the capital of Sana.

Sana has been convulsed by nearly two weeks of fighting between Saleh and the powerful Ahmar brothers, who head the president's own Hashid tribal confederation. The fighting took a deadly turn Friday with the assault on the president's residence in the southern section of Yemen.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has intensified the American covert war in Yemen, exploiting a growing power vacuum in the country to strike at militant suspects with armed drones and fighter jets, according to American officials.
The acceleration of the American campaign in recent weeks comes amid a violent conflict in Yemen that has left the government in Sana, a United States ally, struggling to cling to power. Yemeni troops that had been battling militants linked to Al Qaeda in the south have been pulled back to the capital, and American officials see the strikes as one of the few options to keep the militants from consolidating power.

On Friday, American jets killed Abu Ali al-Harithi, a midlevel Qaeda operative, and several other militant suspects in a strike in southern Yemen. According to witnesses, four civilians were also killed in the airstrike. Weeks earlier, drone aircraft fired missiles aimed at Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born cleric who the United States government has tried to kill for more than a year. Mr. Awlaki survived.

Sanaa, Yemen (CNN) -- Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Sanaa on Wednesday, marching, chanting and calling for the United Nations to come out with a firm resolution in support for change in the country.
The protest came as the U.N. Security Council was discussing Yemen's political crisis.
Thousands of women carrying their children participated in the marches, which lasted more than four hours.
"We leave our houses today calling the world to help us. We have no jobs, no electricity, and no security, and that is why we are demanding change," said Fanda al-Sarari, a women protester in Sanaa.
Protesters raised banners calling on the world to stop supporting Yemen's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh.
The government is trying to come up with a solution to end the political stalemate. Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi met with Gulf Cooperation Council ambassadors in Yemen, reinforcing the president's stated desire to implement a peaceful transition of power in keeping with the Constitution.
