You are right of course Vidya . The article above actually clearly shows radiation poisoning in this case is an option but not a given fact. I hope the scientist's claim that they want to get to the bottom of this tragedy will meet success.
It does obviously need further investigation.
If these  sea Lions died from starvation as they seem to have landed ashore emaciated what caused the other sea creatures they rely on for food to vanish from the ocean ? Could be more than one reason.

Thanks for stepping in this thread Vidya.

Yeah, I dont like to step in here too often. Its too sad. I prefer the ostrich philosophy - strategy these days. As you know I was a marine biologist by profession, and all my friends and ex colleagues are now out of work, nobody is really checking the state of the oceans. Its all carbon bollox these days. I dont believe they will ever report radiation levels truthfully.

Most environmental clean up is due to large polluting factories going out of business and shutting their plants down.

Most large death events are due to acute toxins, lack of oxygen (not with sea lions) or starvation. Surely with radiation there would be lesions? If this health ranger guy wanted to, he could easily take samples for radiation, or just walk down the beach with a Geiger counter?

I did read the sardine populations had crashed, then I read they are ok... shame more people dont get off their backsides and go look for themselves rather than trying to put the world to rights in facebook.

    Minor rant over Wink

The more I think about this the less likely it is that radiation has caused mass seal death. Radiation in high doses will kill you quickly.. but in small doses it will cause cancer, and the timescales involved will vary, typically up to 5 years for the onset of cancer. Once you have cancer death can take a while... i.e. there would be a steady decline in numbers, a varying time for the cancer to take hold and a varying time for it to kill. There would not be a mass-death event as seen in the seals.

The only way radiation can be linked to this is indirectly.. ie it killed something else down the food chain and caused starvation.

Im not saying Fuk - u -shiva (as in, we can do a better job) isnt terrible, its worse than we can imagine and its still spewing its death to the planet every day every day every day every day ....

blaming fukushima for california is perhaps distracting from the real cause, what else is going on?

I quite see your point Vidya and tend to agree.
As far as radiation from fukushima is concerned I think it can't be taken as an isolated reason but it may be of concern as a cumulative effect piling up on top of various other human poisoning our oceans suffer from which over the years have been weakening sea life. I would tend to think that healthy organisms  will fight radiation better than unhealthy ones providing these doses are not deadly.

To me the earth is an extension of our own bodies. The shape she is since the industrial revolution tells a lot about our own organisms and the blind eyes we have when we deal with them.

    4/6/2015

    By Courtney Sherwood

PORTLAND, Ore. (Reuters) - Radiation from Japan's 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster has for the first time been detected along a North American shoreline, though at levels too low to pose a significant threat to human or marine life, scientists said on Monday.

Trace amounts of Cesium-134 and Cesium-137 were detected in samples collected ON Feb. 19 off the coast of Ucluelet, a small town on Vancouver Island in Canada's British Columbia, said Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution scientist Ken Buesseler.

"Radioactivity can be dangerous, and we should be carefully monitoring the oceans after what is certainly the largest accidental release of radioactive contaminants to the oceans in history," Buesseler said in a statement.

The levels the group detected are extremely low. For example, swimming in the Vancouver Island water every day for a year would provide a dose of radiation less than a thousand times smaller than a single dental X-ray, Woods Hole said.

In March 2011, an earthquake and tsunami struck the Fukushima nuclear plant, 130 miles (209 km) northeast of Tokyo, sparking triple nuclear meltdowns, forcing more than 160,000 residents to flee from nearby towns, and contaminating water, food and air. It was the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986.

Buesseler said he expects similar low cesium levels to gradually reach other North American shores, possibly extending along the U.S. West Coast from Washington state to California.

"Predicting the spread of radiation becomes more complex the closer it gets to the coast," Buesseler said.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution said its conclusions were drawn from research it collected from community groups and a network of local academics and aquariums to collect water samples and fund radiation testing.

Last November, Woods Hole reported detectable radiation from Fukushima about 100 miles (161 km) off the coast of northern California, but no radiation has yet been detected any closer to U.S. shores.

Tests off the coast of Japan shortly after the 2011 disaster measured radiation at 50 million Becquerels per cubic meter, Buesseler told Reuters. A "Becquerel" is a unit of radioactivity.

The Canadian water sample contained 1.4 Becquerels per cubic meter of Cesium-134 and 5.8 Becquerels per cubic meter of Cesium-137.

Dozens of whales are mysteriously dying off the coast of Alaska

Whales are dying off the coast of Alaska in increasingly alarming numbers. What's worse is the deaths are still a mystery.

Beginning in May, multiple endangered fin whales were discovered floating lifelessly near Kodiak, Alaska.

Since then, 30 whales have been found dead—including 11 fin whales, 14 humpback whales, one grey whale and four that are yet to be identified.

I wonder if all the radiation from Fukushima and the undersea volcanic activity up in that region is doing them in.

It could be tens of thousands.....Nearly 10,000 common murres found dead on an Alaskan beach on the first week of 2016

The first week of January 2016 has seen an increase in the deaths of common murres washing up dead on the beaches of Alaska...
Alaska dispatch news are reporting thousands of dead common murres are washing up on the beaches of Whittier, an unprecedented die-off that has scientists wondering how many more thousands remain uncounted throughout Prince William Sound.
A retired biologist doing a survey in Whittier over the weekend said he witnessed nealy 10,000 dead murres along a mile stretch of the beach there, which is more than five birds per meter officials say.
The scale of the die off along the sound is said to be unprecedented locals say and mind-boggling.
The beach survey probably signifies the real count is probably tens of thousands of the little black and white sea birds officials say.

In warming ocean, record number of seals and sea lions sicken and starve

SAUSALITO, Calif. _ They are brought in with all sorts of problems: lockjaw, poisoning, cancer and even bullet wounds from fishermen. But most of the record number of seals and sea lions washing up on California's shores and being brought to a regional rescue center are starving.

Unprecedented warm waters off the Pacific coast over the past two years have led fish that marine mammals feed on to move to colder waters — making it difficult for seals and sea lions to nourish themselves, let alone feed their pups. With the current El Niño weather event expected to continue bringing warm water over the rest of the winter, this slow-motion catastrophe is likely to continue.

The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, just outside San Francisco, rescues 600 to 800 seals and sea lions a year on average from the 600 miles of California coastline it covers, from north of San Francisco to just above Santa Barbara County in the south.

But in 2015, the center was brought a record 1,799 animals — including California sea lions, Guadalupe fur seals and northern fur seals. The 106 northern fur seals it rescued more than tripled its previous record.

And the Marine Mammal Center sees only a fraction of strandings statewide. The California Marine Mammal Stranding Network, a network of independent groups overseen by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, keeps track of stranding events for both live and dead animals, including seals and sea lions, across California. In 2015, they counted more than 4,200 California sea lions, 90 Guadalupe fur seals, and 70 northern fur seals.

It's now thought to be more than 300.000 dead common murres the largest murre die-off ever recorded and it's just the tip of a very large iceberg

The mass of dead seabirds that have washed up on Alaska beaches in past months is unprecedented in size, scope and duration, a federal biologist said at an Anchorage science conference.
The staggering die-off of common murres, the iconic Pacific seabirds sometimes likened to flying penguins, is a signal that something is awry in the Gulf of Alaska, said Heather Renner, supervisory wildlife biologist at the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.
"We are in the midst of perhaps the largest murre die-off ever recorded," Renner told the Alaska Marine Science Symposium on Thursday.
While there have been big die-offs of murres and other seabirds in the past, recorded since the 1800s, this one dwarfs all of them, Renner said.
"This event is almost certainly larger than the murres killed in the Exxon Valdez oil spill," she said. After that spill -- at the time, the nation's largest -- about 22,000 dead murres were recovered by crews conducting extensive beach searches in the four months after the tanker grounding, according to the Exxon Valdez Trustee Council, the federal-state panel that administers funds paid to settle spill-related claims for natural-resource damages.
Now, hundreds and thousands of dead murres are turning up on a wide variety of Alaska beaches, including nearly 8,000 discovered this month on a mile-long stretch in Whittier, she said.
A preliminary survey in Prince William Sound has already turned up more than 22,000 dead murres there, she said.
Starving, dying and dead murres are showing up far from their marine habitat, in inland places as distant as Fairbanks, hundreds of miles from the Gulf of Alaska coast, making the die-off exceptionally large in geographic scale.
Even if she weren't an expert, the bird die-off would be obvious to Renner.
She lives in Homer, where the beaches are "littered" with murre carcasses, she said.
"You can't walk more than a few feet without finding murres," she said.
Since only a small proportion of those killed ever show up as carcasses on the shore -- past studies put that proportion at 15 percent -- the actual death toll is likely much higher, (300.000) emphasis by The Big Wobble.
The murre die-off began last spring, making it an especially long-lasting event. And would probably rule out El-Nino as the cause.
It coincides with widespread deaths of other marine animals, from whales in the Gulf of Alaska to sea lions in California.
Once again an "expert" gives only a small percentage of what is really happening.....
The above is of course only a small part of a west coast echo system which appears to be on melt down with Whales, fur seals, sea otters, walrus, dolphins, birds, fish, mussels and starfish, all dying in catastrophic numbers along the coast from Mexico to Alaska for almost four years now and it's getting worse.
The die-off is overwhelmingly affecting common murres rather than thick-billed murres, which are closely related but tend to use slightly more western and northwestern waters from the Aleutians to the Chukchi Sea.
The immediate cause of the bird deaths is starvation.

I'm glad I'll not be around in 2048 when the world's oceans are declared empty of fish...a barren wasteland. Such a tragedy I could not bear. As it is the NOAA says that 70% of seabirds are depleted and 75% of the world's fish are depleted. Our children's children face this future.

Ten's of thousands of dead marine life after another week of carnage across the globe for fish as reports flood in of mass die offs

Yet another week of carnage across the globe for sea creatures as reports flood in of mass die offs and around the World
Just this morning reports of 12 dolphins found stranded and dead this month in Asturias, Spain. Of the dozen dolphins killed so far this year, three appeared in Llanes, two in Tapia de Casariego, two in Castrillón, a couple in Luarca and three in Verdicio, Villaviciosa and Colunga.
Also this morning hundreds of fish and crabs have died after extreme Queensland weather in Australia.
Yesterday thousands of dead herring where found in the Bjorndal Fjord in Norway, lack of oxygen suspected.
In England an 'Environmental disaster': 50,000 fish die in Oswestry's River Morda after chemical leak, a spokesman said “Five generations of fish have been totally wiped out. “The trout population has been wiped out, the fry, next year’s fry, the food they eat such as the shrimp and the caddisfly. The entire eco-system has been wiped out. It’s caused complete devastation.”
