Graphene may be one answer to new batteries.

This is all about the Tesla motor..... not the batteries.  Okay so it's a little break from batteries.   Want to see what makes the Tesla electric motor so cool?  Watch this.

This shows the production of the VW electric engine.  VW has been hinting  that they are going totally electric by 2022. give or take a year.   If you don't think they are serious about going electric, watch this.

The cost for solar power has come down over the last 10 years because the production of solar units have dramatically increased.  Solar today cost less than 1/2 what it did 10 years ago.  The same is true with batteries only they have not reduced in price enough to make it competitive for electrical companies to store solar energy that is made and use it at night.  However, the cost for batteries is going down and new technology allows newer ways to make batteries.   The only thing that would be better than a reduced cost battery would be to make electricity wireless.  This video reviews how it got started over 100 years ago and where we are today.  If you want to see how long and how much information is out there on this subject then google that term....wireless electricity or go onto Youtube.  you will be surprised.

For a very long time people have tried to make an aluminum battery.  Some Chinese engineers have successfully used carbon and aluminum to make a battery that is better than what is currently on the market.  It recharges faster and can be recharged for more cycles than lithium ion.

This may have been already covered in the videos but is there a design that works with photo voltaic roof membranes coupled with a small turbo diesel electric generator using super caps as storage with regulators on the output ?

It occurred to me that a motor vehicle has so many energy waste products that are not recycled into energy such as heat and wind resistance.

EG Wind resistance can turn low cogging turbines to generate electricity as the car drives.

Heat , well thats a no brainer , photo voltaic cells on the water cooling system or exhaust working as an exchanger or intercooler using the wasted heat energy.

The Turbo Diesel engine can be as small as 500 cc , used primarily at idle to generate electricity for the electric motors when other sources are low for eg at night when photo voltaic cells on the roof cannot collect charge.

you could also use electrostatic aerials to pick up intermittent ambient electrical charge , theres tons of it floating around all the time , this can in turn charge separate super caps for minor electrical system such as the radio , indicators and other minor electrical circuits.

It would occour to me that using compartmentalised battery systems is of benefit.

Anyway loving this thread and wanted to throw in some food for thought , mind you these ideas are so obvious they are probably already being used.

I started looking into battery technology back in the early 90's right after we got our first internet hook up. Think about it. Battery technology has not changed since it came out about 100 years ago. No new upgrades in 100 years. What's up with that? The big thing that was buzzing on line focused on back in those early internet days was developing an aluminum battery. They were promising a miracles new technology who soon develop. It never did..... not until now. This battery is a fantastic combination of aluminum and carbon. Wow, think about how abundant both those elements are. And what is even cooler is how they out perform the lithium carb batteries that are now currently controlling the market. This video was not just a bunch of people talking about making a new technology but it takes you inside the factory making these rascals. They will charge faster and last twice as longer. The applications are incredibly long. It will make the electric car industry take off like a rocket. It will make lap top and other battery run computers to run cooler with no worries about burn out or fires. It will eventually come out in smaller sizes for flashlights but most likely the first big commercial use will be with large solar farms. They will establish charging stations so the batteries can provide power through the night without interruption.

    Awesome battery Bob !

so it would seem we have the technology to stop using fossil fuels. So the new trillion dollar companies of the future are getting together to be the only ones making electricity.

    Could be good ...

I think its of benefit to start thinking of ways to make your own electricity. It would be important to contemplate the Human Laws of Thermodynamics.

The first law, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system.
The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of any isolated system always increases.
The third law states that the entropy of a system approaches a constant value as the temperature approaches absolute zero.

Within this primitive take on energy has its own answers to the mystery of energy creation.

Law 1 energy cannot be created or destroyed. this is false because as you create energy it is used , sounds round about i know. But what the first laws is actually saying is energy depletion is reciprocal. IE. As you use it you create it and as you create it it is recycled into its self.

Because the universe is expanding it tells me we have a surplus of energy that needs to be used. So what we really need is the ability to tap into this energy.

The video below shows a simple machine to make that should power some basic home appliances. Scaled up and perhaps using better components... it can make far more energy.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxHRAWgj5d8

The second law speaks of how conservatism is the universes status quo , i would partially agree with that statement however it is not a holistic view of how the universe works.

Conservatism as it was used in the second law was brought about by an improper observation of space. At the time these laws were written the ability to measure energy was also limited. As science and technology expands and evolves so too have the machines that assist us however they are too limited by those who make them. This is what they were unwittingly referring to as an isolated system.

what if we were to erase the isolated system part of the law and change it ? change it to a system "not connected to universal energy. "

SO back to the first law , it states energy cannot be created or destroyed but we use electricity every day ! it goes into a fridge and its been used ! if it cant be destroyed then where did it go ? my fridge is still in tact ... it still works ... where is the energy ?

    Anyone ?

its been recycled ! it is used and changed into several other energies such as cold , heat and vibration. These energies cant be created or destroyed so where did they go ? into the atmosphere as recycled energy. How does that help me i hear you say ? What it does is tell you that perpetual energy is most certainly possible. We as in the masses, dont have that technology, but it does exist and it is on this planet as we speak.

So how does that help me ? ( uh you humans are so lame )

If it exists here we can create it ! the possibility is YES

so what are you waiting for ?

    Thank you for your post.
With all of the developments and promised developments in battery technology, there is still much work to be done.  Of course it's all about energy.  For years I was a strong proponent of solar but solar is never going to be effective without battery banks to back it and produce power at times when solar cells are not producing.   Conventional nuclear power carries to much baggage for my comfort level.  It is a finite source much like oil and coal. There is an old answer to power production that may solve the worlds needs and bypass some of the limits we currently have with batteries.  The answer may very well be the use of thorium in molten salt reactors.  Thorium is a very abundant element that can be found around the world.   As will be explained in the video below, it is safe, cheap, abundant, and could be used to clean up some of the current nuclear waste.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7baTdyHv8g&t=966s

Once molten salt reactor become common, I for-see the design for these reactors made much more compact so that units could be placed at individual homes and businesses.  The potential is there for this technology to light up the world.  There is a group in Denmark that is designing a reactor to go in a storage trailer that could be placed in the bed of a truck and taken anywhere.  I believe it could power about 200 homes.

    I appreciate your intelligence Bob

A friend of mine years ago spoke of Thorium also , its a remarkable resource.

I think its brilliance is also its downfall.

Who on earth would consider making a reliable and efficient source of energy that is in expensive and good for the environment ?

none of the ding bats in charge, thats for sure.

    hmmm

So my question is , how hard would it be for an average mechanically minded person to replicate a smaller version of a Thorium energy generator?

Could this be scaled down to a small reactor ? something the size of a 10 kv generator for eg.
