Nearly TWO THOUSAND flights canceled amid winter storm

A winter storm started sweeping across the Midwest on Friday, leading to slick roads and runways, as it inched its way toward New England, where it was forecast to dump up to two feet of snow.

Nearly two thousand flights out of domestic airports have been canceled so far as the country braces itself for significant snow and ice, according to flight-tracking site .

The storm led to slick roads and runways, as it inched its way toward New England, where it was forecast to dump up to two feet of snow over the long weekend for Martin Luther King Jr Day.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings from the Dakotas, across the Great Lakes states and into New England.

The weather service at one point warned that conditions in New England over the weekend 'could approach blizzard criteria.' Ice was also a possibility in some areas in the storm's path.

In Nebraska, where freezing drizzle was falling Friday afternoon, authorities closed Omaha's Eppley Airfield after a Southwest Airlines plane slid off an ice-slicked runway. No one was injured.

Eppley suspended all flights for a few hours before it was reopened. But airport officials warned that most flights would continue to be delayed.

In Iowa, the Department of Transportation warned that visibility was less than a half mile in many locations due to snow and wind. In South Dakota, where snow was starting to pile up, authorities warned drivers to give plows extra room.

Chris Nace, who works at a Domino's pizza in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, said several inches of snow had accumulated since early morning and the conditions were slowing down delivery drivers.

'The plows are just getting out,' he said late afternoon. 'Just the main roads are cleared. They haven't gotten to the side streets yet.' But drivers are used to such conditions, he added, and customers 'are pretty understanding.'

The storm was expected to bring between up to 10 inches of snow to the Midwest before walloping the Northeast on Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Albany, New York, said snow could fall at a rate of 1 to 3 inches an hour, creating 'difficult to impossible travel conditions' in areas.

In New York City, the worst of the storm is expected from Saturday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, with snow accumulations of 3-6 inches, followed by rain that could turn to ice as temperatures drop later Sunday. Single-digit temperatures could last into Monday.

Strong wind gusts beginning Sunday afternoon could bring down snow- or ice-burdened tree limbs and power lines.

Officials warn of flight disruptions at airports, as well as possible changes in train schedules.

The Chicago Department of Aviation reported more than 300 flights at O'Hare and Midway international airports had been canceled as of Friday evening.

Amtrak canceled some trains Saturday from Chicago to Washington and New York and between New York and Boston and Pennsylvania on Sunday.

Chicago is forecast to receive as much as 8 inches by Saturday and wind gusts in the Chicago area are expected to reach 35 mph.

Bitterly cold air was expected in the storm's aftermath.

To date, 100 million people are under some form of a winter storm watch, warning or advisory across the United States.

The first of two winter storms hit the Midwest of the country overnight - but it's just a 'nuisance' compared to the 'blockbuster' blizzard that will arrive over the weekend.

It swung through the Midwest to the Northeast through Friday bringing a couple of inches of snow to Pennsylvania and New England states. Light snow fell in major metro areas on the East Coast causing little disruption to Friday morning's commute.

But the second storm, forecast for the weekend, is expected to be far more dangerous and disruptive.

The second storm will exit the Rockies and likely will begin to drop snow late on Friday across Kansas.

For the second week in a row, a major snowstorm will hammer parts of the Midwest and East

The 'blockbuster' blizzard will take hold on Saturday and Sunday, and people are advised to complete any necessary errands beforehand.

According to AccuWeather, the storm could cause a buildup of ice exceeding a quarter of an inch from parts of northern Virginia to the southern coast of New England.

This is high enough to bring down trees and power lines, causing widespread power outages, the website reported.

Heavy winds and snow could also trigger outages in the interior Northeast. The second storm will be more significant for the Northeast than the first.

Forecasters expect the snow to start falling Saturday evening into Sunday up and down the East Coast.

Father and son John, left, and Johnny Nagel were dressed for the cold temperatures on Friday while shoveling snow outside their north Bismarck, North Dakota

'Plows are not likely to be able to keep up,' AccuWeather meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said according to USA Today.

'As the storm strengthens, winds will cause major blowing and drifting of snow.

'Those who are on the road through the heart of the snow and ice area will be at risk for becoming stranded for many hours,' Sosnowski said.

People 'may have to face temperatures plummeting to dangerously low levels,' he added.

Although it will clear the skies on Sunday, a blast of freezing arctic air will see temperatures plummet to sub-zero for around 200 million Americans.

'The second of two storms this week will be a blockbuster in terms of impact from dangerous blizzard conditions,' said senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski, calling the first storm a 'nuisance storm'.

Strong winds may accompany the snow in the Midwest, potentially leading to blizzard conditions in some areas.

'Heavy snow will begin by Friday evening over the central plains and then progress eastward by the weekend,' the NWS advised. 'Some thunderstorms will also be possible across the Gulf Coast region.'

The storm system set to hit the Northeast over the weekend could bring feet of snow in places

Some areas could see ice covering, making roads slick and travel dangerous this weekend

Following the second storm system, a blast of arctic air is expected to plunge south from Canada across the Plains and Midwest on Saturday, hitting the East Coast on Sunday.

Temperatures could drop some 15 to 25 degrees below normal due to the polar vortex, according to the NWS.

On Sunday, the low temperature is forecast at eight degrees in New York City, with wind chills reaching a bone-chilling minus-20.

Sunday's lows are forecast at 9 degrees in Chicago, minus-3 in Cincinnati, 7 in Boston, 10 in Washington DC and 20 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

On Thursday morning, California received the brunt of a severe winter storm killing five in its wake.

Caltrans reported a storm total of 37 inches of snow in Kingvale since Tuesday.

Heavy snow from the storm also caused an empty private jet to pop a wheelie.

Midwest and Northeast brace for upcoming winter storm

Heavy snow from a series of deadly California storms caused a private jet (pictured) to pop a wheelie on Wednesday

Employees of Truckee Tahoe Airport returned to work on Wednesday to find the Citation X jet had performed the impressive stunt overnight after a foot-and-a-half of snow blanketed the region.

Photos showed the snow - dubbed 'Sierra cement' for its thick and heavy texture - weighing down the jet's tail and rear engines, causing its nose to lift off the ground into a stationary wheelie.

'Morning after 16'+ of heavy #SierraCement at elevation 5,901' in Truckee Tahoe. A Citation X tail-dragging,' the Truckee Tahoe Airport said in a .

Mark Lamb, the aviation and community services manager at the airport, told that the aircraft's massive engines in the rear 'tend to be a little tail heavy anyway' and made it easier for the snow to weigh it down.

Adelaide hit 46.6C, the hottest temperature recording in any Australian state capital city since records began 80 years ago, sending homelessness shelters into a “code red”, and sparking fears of another mass fish death in the Menindee Lakes in the neighbouring state of New South Wales.

In central and western Australia, local authorities were forced to carry out an emergency animal cull, shooting 2,500 camels – and potentially a further hundred feral horses – who were dying of thirst.

One of the coldest spells in HISTORY wreaks havoc across the Midwest where rail tracks are set alight to keep trains moving and people are warned to 'avoid taking deep breaths' in -70 wind chill

The polar vortex is here and it's wreaking havoc on tens of millions of people across the United States who are bracing for a deep arctic chill that has halted postage services in five states and cancelled more than 2,700 flights. Winter Storm Jayden has already been blamed for at least four weather-related deaths in Midwestern states, and authorities believe it will continue to life-threatening throughout the week. 'Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,' the saying goes, but even the US Postal Service is halting deliveries due to the extreme cold. The federal service said that it will not deliver mail in all or parts of five Midwest states on Wednesday because of the dangerous Arctic air blast. Delivery and other services will be suspended in Minnesota, western Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and western Illinois. The suspension also includes picking up mail from businesses and collection boxes, and picking up packages from residences and business. Forecasters have predicted that Chicago will be colder than parts of Antarctica. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast for Wednesday night called for temperatures in Chicago as low as minus 28, with wind chills to minus 50. Because of the extreme cold in Chicago, crews had to set rail tracks (center) on fire to keep trains moving smoothly. In Chicago alone, more than 1,550 were canceled in and out of the city. 'These are actually a public health risk and you need to treat it appropriately,' Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday. 'They are life-threatening conditions and temperatures.'

Chicago will also be colder than Alaska, according to the Weather Channel.

'Fairbanks in the typically cold interior of Alaska is forecast to have highs in the mid-teens Wednesday, much above the late January average high of 2 degrees,' Chris Dolce said.

And even the US Postal Service is halting deliveries due to the extreme cold.

Sub-zero temperatures already blanketing parts of Canada began sweeping across the Midwest and towards the East Coast Tuesday evening.

The big chill in the Midwest came on the heels of a major storm that dumped up to a foot of snow on the region over the weekend - and reportedly claimed at least two lives so far.

The NWS forecast for Wednesday night called for temperatures in Chicago as low as minus 28, with wind chills to minus 50.

Detroit's outlook was for Wednesday overnight lows around minus 15, with wind chills dropping to minus 40.

Governors in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan declared emergencies as the worst of the cold threatened on Wednesday.

'We need everyone to do your part and make sure you and your families are prepared,' said Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

The bitter cold is the result of a split in the polar vortex that allowed temperatures to plunge much further south in North America than normal.

'These are actually a public health risk and you need to treat it appropriately,' Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday.

'They are life-threatening conditions and temperatures.'

Extreme weather conditions have prompted Amtrak to cancel all trains into and out of Chicago.

Amtrak says short-distance and long-distance, overnight trains are cancelled for Wednesday. Short-distance services are also canceled on Thursday, and most long-distance services to or from Chicago are also not expected to operate Thursday.

An Amtrak spokesman said customers with reservations on the affected trains will be accommodated on trains with similar departure times on another day.

At least four deaths were linked to the weather system, including a man struck and killed by a snow plow in the Chicago area, a young couple whose SUV struck another on a snowy road in northern Indiana and a Milwaukee man found frozen to death in a garage.

Officials in large Midwestern cities including Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago and Detroit were desperately trying to get the homeless off the streets.

Minneapolis charitable groups that operate warming places and shelters expanded hours and capacity, and ambulance crews handled all outside calls as being potentially life-threatening, according to Hennepin County Emergency Management Director Eric Waage.

MetroTransit said it wouldn't remove people from buses if they were riding them simply to stay warm, and weren't being disruptive.

To be sung to the tune of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah

I heard about a winter storm, it's cold and dreary, stay home, stay warm.

It's cold and its a snowy winter morning.

It goes like this, when the snow hits, the buses cant get out it,

It's cold and its a snowy winter morning.

It's a snow day. A winter cold day. Stay home and just play.

    It's a great family day.

I know you want to be in school, today we just cant accommodate you.

Bring cookies and I'll try to get one on Wednesday.

And even though we wrote this song, I'm sad and lonely when you're gone.

    It's a cold and it's a snowy winter morning.

It's a snow day. A winter cold day. Stay home and just play.

    It's a great family day.

Be safe, be warm and be a Swartz Creek Dragon

This winter storm will break real soon, please try not to sleep 'till noon,

You really should be working for your parents.

It's a snow day. A winter cold day. Stay home and just play.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6651663/At-12-people-died-including-Iowa-student-polar-vortex-wreaks-havoc-Midwest.html

The deadly polar vortex wreaking havoc across the United States has left at least 12 people dead, including a college student who was found in the freezing cold at the University of Iowa.

Authorities said the body of Gerald Belz was found behind an academic hall just before 3am on Wednesday by campus police.

The 18-year-old was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. While officials believe his death was related to dangerously low temperatures at the time he was found, officials have not given a specific cause of death.

The National Weather Service says the wind chill around 3am was negative 51F degrees.

Belz's family said their son was studying pre-med and that he had just graduated last May from Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School. His family told KCRG that doctors did not find alcohol in his system.

The painfully cold weather system that put much of the Midwest into a historic deep freeze is set to linger on Thursday but it is pushing east and losing much of its bite.

Temperatures plunged to -42F on Wednesday in parts of the Midwest and is set to linger on Thursday, but the polar vortex is now pushing east and forecast to lose much of its bite.

The cold halted postal services across the Midwest and led to 2,000 flights being canceled on Thursday.

It has also caused at least a dozen deaths since Saturday with some dying in weather-related traffic accidents and others from freezing to death due to apparent exposure to the cold.

The biggest snowstorm since February 2017 slammed Seattle at the start of the weekend.

Snow totals ranged from 6-10 inches in the area, including 7.9 inches of snowfall recorded at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, as the storm dumped heavy snow along the coast of Washington and Oregon since Friday afternoon.

Around 4 inches covered Portland, Oregon.

The last snowstorm of this magnitude slammed Seattle early in February two years prior, when the airport recorded 7.1 inches.

More than 60,000 people lost power during the blizzard, which triggered major travel disruptions including hundreds of canceled flights and the closure of a 20-mile stretch of Interstate 90 in central Washington due to spin-outs and poor visibility.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency on Friday ahead of the snowstorm.

“A powerful storm system diving southward brought heavy snow to much of Seattle over the past 24 hours," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio.

"The storm is drifting away and will continue to unload heavy snow on the Sierra Nevada in California into Sunday, but left the Seattle area with 6-10 inches of snow in its wake," Rossio said.

This storm pushed the February snowfall total at the airport to 10.6 inches, making this February Seattle's snowiest since 1949. A total of 13.1 inches fell that month.

The Seattle area faces another one-two punch of snowstorms from late Sunday into Tuesday of next week.

Apocalyptic Sounds In The Sky: No Explanation For
"Mysterious Booms And Flashes Of Light" All Across America

    Unexplained Events Happening Worldwide! (2019)

For weeks, Americans all over the country have been rattled by extremely loud booming sounds that seem to have no explanation, and they are often accompanied by “mysterious flashes of light”.

These strange booms are shaking homes and rattling windows, and some witnesses say that they sound like cannons being fired.  And even though the “mystery booms” and accompanying flashes of light have been captured on camera all across the nation, so far the authorities do not have a reasonable explanation for why they are happening.  Unfortunately, it does not appear that this strange phenomenon is going to go away any time soon.  In fact, the Sun is reporting that the frequency of these “mystery booms” appears “to have gathered pace over the past week”…

MYSTERY booming sounds have been shaking houses and terrifying residents after “flashes of light” were spotted across America.

Experts have been left baffled by a spate of seismic booms from Arizona to New York that appear to have gathered pace over the past week.

Over this last weekend, this mystery started to get much more national attention after an incident in Rhode Island on Saturday was followed by one in New York City on Sunday…

On Saturday, loud bangs were reported in Rhode Island, where Jeremy Braza’s doorbell captured a video and audio of a loud noise over a three minute period.

“The whole house shook,” he told TurnTo10.com. “It woke my wife up, woke up all my children.”

The following night an explosion was heard in New York, accompanied by a mysterious flash in the sky.

“What the heck was that boom or explosion in park slope Brooklyn?”, asked Matt Wasowski on Twitter.

But of course this is not just an east coast phenomenon.  For example, a “loud boom” that was reported in Tennessee on January 31st was heard across three separate counties…

It began on January 31 when residents of three separate counties in Tennessee reported hearing a loud boom around 11:30 a.m. Local chemical plants were contacted but reported nothing anomalous. Authorities in Bradley, McInn, and Polk counties are still investigating what could have caused such a powerful noise.

And during that same time frame, numerous North Carolina residents called authorities to report “unexplained loud blasts and booms”…

That same day, local news in North Carolina reported that people in Wake and Franklin counties have been calling law enforcement agencies to report unexplained loud blasts and booms that keep them awake at night. Two homeowners even reported that the booms are so powerful that they have briefly lost power as a result of the tremors. So far, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office has been unable to pinpoint the source of the booms.

A few days later, “strange explosion-like sounds” were being reported by numerous residents in New Orleans…

The mystery surrounding the strange explosion-like sounds heard by residents in the metro area continues to grow. Late Monday night, several were heard in Lakeview, one of which was caught on camera by Eyewitness News.

A story that began in Mid-City, has taken crews to Harahan, River Ridge and Wagaman. Now we go to Lakeview, where late Monday night, the mysterious ‘booms’ were heard again.

Are you starting to see a pattern?

Large booming sounds are being reported

Winter Storm Petra is forecast to impact parts of 39 of the contiguous 48 states, including every state east of the Mississippi River. The map above shows the cold air which will blanket most of the country this week

220 million brace for Winter Storm Petra:
Forecasters predict 39 states will be hit by up to one foot of snow in the coming days as it moves...

The Heavenly ski resort at Lake Tahoe reported 15 inches of snow that fell between Saturday and Sunday.

Since the beginning of February, several feet of snow have accumulated in the Sierra Nevada, creating an unusually large snowpack, according to the Los Angeles Times.

As of this weekend, the snowpack - the layers of snow that accumulate at high altitudes during the winter before feeding streams and rivers as they melt in the spring - is at 141 per cent of its seasonal average.

Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories have been issued for parts of the Southwest, the central and southern Plains, and the mid-Mississippi Valley, according to The Weather Channel.

The National Weather Service on Monday said the storm system could produce snow and ice in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas.

The weather service has issued a winter weather advisory for most of Tuesday through Wednesday morning for parts of western Texas, much of Oklahoma and into northwestern Arkansas.

Up to three inches of snow and a tenth of an inch of ice are possible in the region.

The storm could also bring heavy rain to eastern Arkansas, where many rivers are just starting to fall following heavy rains.

The weather service says 6 to 8 inches of rain is possible in eastern Arkansas, where up to 6 inches fell in recent days.

Forecasters say the storm will also affected West Virginia.

The National weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon.

The watch areas include the Eastern Panhandle, the Potomac Highlands, the Greenbrier Valley and mountain regions.

The weather service says up to 6 inches of snow and some ice accumulations are possible.

It says power outages and tree damage are likely due to ice, which would create treacherous travel conditions.

Higher elevations could receive greater amounts.

By Wednesday, heavy snowfall is forecast for the larger cities in the Northeast, including Washington, D.C., New York, and Boston.

Pittsburgh is likely to see between 1 to 3 inches while the capital could see as much as 6 inches.

Flagstaff, Arizona, sets all-time snow record as major snowstorm buries southwestern US. A storm is unloading feet of snow, creating blizzard conditions and shutting down travel over the mountains of Arizona, New Mexico and southwestern Colorado.

The storm began on Wednesday when it spread disruptive snow over the northern Sierra Nevada, including Donner Summit, California, before shifting over the interior southwestern United States.

During Wednesday evening, parts of the valley around Las Vegas picked up over 4 inches of snow. Travel became slick and treacherous in the surrounding area as a result.

Schools in Las Vegas were closed on Friday due to the recent snow and freezing conditions.

Snow was seen falling near the mountains surrounding Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, including in Pasadena and West Hollywood. The snow did not accumulate, but people went outside to see the unusual snow fall from the sky.

On Thursday, Interstate 5 at the Grapevine in Southern California was closed as snow created difficult travel.

While snow has ended in California and around Las Vegas, it will continue to pound Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado into Friday night.

Shocking pictures show widespread flooding in California's wine country as thousands of homes

Images show people forced to kayak down flooded streets and inspecting the damage caused by the rain

Evacuation orders were lifted and all roads into Guerneville and neighboring Monte Rio were opened Friday, almost three days after the rain-swollen Russian River turned them into 'islands'

Days of heavy rain had left the towns reachable only by boat Wednesday and around 2,600 homes and businesses in the popular tourist destination were flooded by water up to eight feet

Mud and debris covers cars, homes and roads after 3,700 people were ordered to evacuate

Along the main road in Guerneville, business owners inspected the damage caused by floodwaters that rose about 46 feet on Wednesday night - the river's highest level in 24 years

Officials are still warning people to stay away from the area unless they have necessary business

These shocking pictures show just how widespread the flooding in California's wine country was this week with thousands of homes and business facing ruin by the heavy rain.

Residents were told to leave the area and roads were closed after buildings in the popular tourist destination were flooded by water up to eight feet deep. Two towns - Guerneville and neighboring Monte Rio - became 'islands'.

Images show people forced to kayak down flooded streets after days of heavy rain left some areas reachable only by boat after being cut off by the rain-swollen Russian River on Wednesday.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office said on Wednesday morning: 'Guerneville is officially an island.'

By Friday the evacuation orders were lifted and all roads into Guerneville and neighboring Monte Rio were opened - almost three days later. But residents returned to scenes of devastation and pictures from the scene show people coming to terms with the extensive damage.

Mud and debris covers cars, homes and roads after 3,700 people were ordered to evacuate as waters reached up to eight feet deep.

Jason Flint prepared for the flooding by putting his deli's valuable equipment on pallets and milk crates stacked several feet above the ground.

But it wasn't enough and when he returned to Guerneville Friday he found mud-covered refrigerators, display cases and food crates strewn about by 6-foot-high murky water.

'My entire deli is wiped out,' Flint said. 'It's crazy. It's too much to get my head around this.'

Denver Weather: Coldest Early March Temps In Nearly 60 Years
    https://denver.cbslocal.com/2019/03/03/denver-weather-near-record-cold/

DENVER (CBS4) – Arctic cold will grip the eastern half of Colorado today and tonight with some areas seeing the coldest temperatures for early March in nearly 60 years according to the National Weather Service. Many places on the northeast plains fell below zero Sunday morning including Denver International Airport with a low of -6 degrees.

Due to the bitter cold there is a Wind Chill Advisory in effect for much of northeast and east-central Colorado, including Denver and the I-25 urban corridor, where wind chill values could briefly hit -20 degrees. The advisory covers both Sunday and Monday morning.

There is another chance for snow showers today in Denver and along the Front Range but they will be light with only minor accumulation. The best chance to see additional snow will be this afternoon and evening. The main story is the cold with highs struggling to reach the teens.

Another bitter cold start to the day is in store Monday for eastern Colorado with many locations falling below zero once again.

It’s a much warmer and wetter forecast for the mountains of western Colorado as another batch of Pacific moisture arrives today. More snow is on the way and some places could see up to another foot of powder.

Most mountain areas remain under a Winter Storm Warning through early Monday.

'Like a giant knife scraped the ground': Aerial photographs reveal the utter devastation caused by the 170mph Alabama tornadoes as they razed homes to the ground, killing 23, including three children, as rescuers say the death toll will rise

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6771651/Aerial-photographs-reveal-utter-devastation-caused-170mph-Alabama-tornadoes.html

Stunning aerial photographs reveal extent of the destruction caused by tornadoes in Lee County, Alabama

Among the dead were Armando Hernandez, six, and Taylor Thornton, ten, both from Beauregard, Alabama

David Wayne Dean, 53, was killed when his double wide trailer was ripped apart Sunday by a twister

Vicki Braswell, 69, was killed when the wall of her mobile home collapsed on her as she and her family sought shelter

Felicia Renee Woodall and her boyfriend, Ryan Pence, were also identified as two of the 23 fatalities

Lee County Coroner Brian Harris said at a press briefing Monday 17 of the 23 victims have been identified

Sheriff Jay Jones said rescue crews canvassed areas with the worst damage, but the search is ongoing

The twister has been classified as an F4 on the Fujita scale as early assessments indicate winds hit 170mph

Officials say it carved a path of destruction 24 miles long and nearly a mile wide along Alabama Highway 51

It was the deadliest tornado in the US since 2013, when an F5 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, killed 24 people

At least a dozen tornadoes were reported Sunday as a massive storm system tore across parts of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida, leaving more than 40,000 people without power

The winds Sunday afternoon obliterated numerous homes, leaving huge, jumbled piles of wood and household belongings.

Some homes were reduced to concrete slabs. Debris was scattered across the countryside, with shredded metal hanging from the pine trees.

'I’m not going to be surprised if we don’t come up with some more deceased. Hopefully we won’t,' Coroner Bill Harris said.

He said the dead included almost entire families and at least three children, ages 6, 9 and 10.

A post on the Lee-Scott Academy’s Facebook page said fourth-grader Taylor Thornton was among those killed.

On the day after the disaster, volunteers used chain saws to clear paths for emergency workers. Neighbors and friends helped one another find some of their belongings in the ruins.

In like a lion: Historically cold March temperatures are freezing a large part of the U.S.
Temperatures range from 88 in Florida to -44 in Montana

    https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/03/04/historic-cold-envelops-most-of-the-lower-48/

By Ian Livingston | Special To The Washington Post

After much anticipation, some of the most frigid air this winter – and this late in the year on record – descended on the Lower 48 United States this weekend. Cold even by January standards, it is here to stay for several more days.

Widespread temperatures in the minus-20s to minus-30s or colder invaded the northern tier on Sunday morning, sending wind chills below minus-50 in spots. Including Monday, below zero readings have been recorded as far south as the southern portion of the Central Plains and into the lower Midwest and Great Lakes region.

Sunday also featured a coldest low of minus-44 degrees in Montana and a warmest high of 88 in Florida. That made for a remarkable 132 degree temperature difference across the Lower 48.

When this freakish cold spell is done, several hundred new record low maximum and record low temperatures will have fallen. In the last seven days alone, cold records are outpacing warm by about four to one across the nation.

Deep chill pushed south of the Canadian border early in the weekend. Widespread temperatures in the minus-30s to minus-40s blanketed Montana by Sunday morning.

The National Weather Service office in Great Falls reported that Lewiston, in central Montana, set an all-time record for March and this late in the winter with a low of minus-34 degrees, toppling the previous mark of minus-28 on multiple dates. Great Falls had low of minus-32 degrees which was a tie for the coldest temperature in March there, last done on the 10th in 1932.

If those absurdly frigid temperatures were not enough, wind chills were pushed even lower. A truly bonkers wind chill of minus-57 was recorded in north-central parts of the state at Havre.

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 13 D0vlDtVX0AE1ykq

Other record lows occurred across the Northern and Central Plains into the Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Wind chills between minus-40 and minus-50 were common across the northern tier as well. Dangerous weather — no hyperbole needed.

As a small sample of the many records on Sunday to the east of Montana, new daily lows were set in places lik Sioux Falls, South Dakota. with minus-17 and Minnesota’s Twin Cities at minus-13. Record cold high temperatures were posted in spots like the icebox of the U.S. at International Falls, Minnesota, with minus-2; Duluth, Minnesota, where the high was 1 degree, and Marquette, Michigan, where it got to a comparatively balmy 5 degrees.

In Denver, Sunday’s low of minus-6 was the coldest in March since 1960. Its high of 6 degrees also broke a record, and the average of zero made it the coldest day of this winter. Record lows were also set in the Pacific Northwest, including several locations in Oregon.

The bone-chilling story continues Monday. Much like Sunday, the records are numerous.

Earth Changes from September 2017 - to present / Biblical Hurricanes, Earthquakes, Floods, Volcanic Activity, Fires, Snow Ice Storms - Page 13 D00btbwX0AEDEH_

Record lows were recorded from the Pacific Northwest to the Great Lakes in the north and from the Continental Divide to the Mississippi River and Texas on the southern end.

A hard-to-fathom minus-46 was recorded in Elk Park, Montana According to the Weather Service, this is likely a new all-time record for March and so late in the year, for the entire state. It’s also very close to the coldest ever recorded in the Lower 48 in March, which was minus-50 in 1906 in Snake River, Wyo.

North Platte, Nebraska fell to minus-25 degrees Monday morning. This daily and March record was likely assisted by a fresh snow pack. The city recorded a record daily snowfall of six inches on Sunday.

Livingston, Montana, reached minus-32 degrees Monday morning, which demolished the old daily record of minus-11. In Kansas, record lows were minus-7 in Hill City and minus-1 in Dodge City as well as Garden City.

A slew of new records is also expected Monday afternoon and night before this Arctic blast begins to relent. The Great Lakes is taking the brunt Monay. Widespread high temperatures in the single digits and teens are targeting a number of long-period stations.

In Chicago, a city lovingly called “Chiberia” – a play on Siberia in the Arctic – a high around 10 degrees is expected to set a new record cold maximum. According to meteorologist Peter Mullinax, the city’s O’Hare Airport has only recorded temperatures as cold as the minus-3 Monday morning on three other times this late in the season. It’s also one of the ten coldest temperatures in March all-time for the city. Wind chills were in the minus-20s Monday morning.

Other locations across Wisconsin and Iowa into Minnesota are expected to only make the single digits for highs Monday. In Michigan, most spots are looking at record low maximums as well.

Although Monday marks the maximum extent of this Arctic blast across the Lower 48, most of the nation will awake to unusually cold March weather on Tuesday. At least a handful of additional records are possible, especially in the South and East as the coldest air relative to normal moves into those regions Tuesday.
For Tuesday, the Northeast mostly sees 20s for highs with teens nearer the international border. Cold air also remains anchored over much of the Plains, with highs still running about 25 degrees below normal there.

While this outbreak is waning through the week, much of the central U.S. in particular may continue to stay colder than normal into the near future. No major warm ups are on the horizon just yet.

The sun's physical dynamics, magnetic field, solar flares, ultraviolet radiation, etc...are at a historic minimum after decades of strong activity. this will lead to rapid and unprecedented cooling. It also has an effect on not only our weather, also on our tectonics. This has never even been considered by "Global warming alarmists". Who react to an agenda, not the realities. How can we deal with "climate change" (the reality is we are at the mercy of the sun when it comes to climate) when only one small factor (Carbon) is the perceived boogeyman? Ignoring the other factors to pimp a political agenda is just plain ignorance. Furthermore, when science becomes political it also becomes junk.
